Vitamin D, standalone, cannot cure or prevent COVID-19.
However, Vitamin D is a very important vitamin that is required by our body to function properly. It is an overall component that contributes to our immunity.
A systematic review of 25 trials have shown that Vitamin D supplements can play an important role in preventing respiratory tract infections. At the moment, there are 34 ongoing clinical trials that are testing the efficacy of Vitamin D for COVID-19 management.
There is no current guidelines from World Health Organization (WHO), Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on taking Vitamin D supplements as a prophylactic to prevent COVID-19.
Research has shown that 13% of the adults are susceptible to Vitamin D deficiency all year round. Hence, it is advised to get your Vitamin D levels checked and take proper diet and medication if you are deficient.
