Fact Check: Are COVID PCR tests associated with human cloning?

Just In
Is human cloning linked with COVID PCR test?
No. There is no scientific evidence in proving that COVID PCR test is linked with human cloning. PCR test is done to copy a segment of DNA containing a gene of interest to make various copies. The research paper referred here is focused on gene cloning, rather than reproductive cloning which is used to produce copies of animals.

Quick Take

rating

A social media post claims that the COVID PCR tests are not tests at all and are linked to human cloning technology. We fact-checked and found this claim to be False.

The Claim

A Facebook post shares a clip of a video originating from an Aug. 18 segment of the Stew Peters Show titled “Patent PCR Test Linked To Human Cloning Video Shows Animal Experiments, Cross-Species Genetics.” During the video, Ariyana Love, who describes herself as a naturopathic doctor, claims that she has patent proof that PCR tests have never been about testing for COVID, as people were told, it is about cloning. They are cloning devices.

Fact Check

What is cloning?

Cloning refers to the process of replicating organisms from identical DNA either through natural or artificial means. The clones produced through such procedures are genetically identical copies of any biological entity. Genes, cells, tissues, and even whole animals can all be cloned. There are some examples of clones that already exist naturally. For example, single-celled organisms such as bacteria clone themselves as they reproduce. There are three types of artificial cloning, namely, gene cloning, reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning.

Is there an association between COVID PCR Test and human cloning?

No. There is no scientific evidence to prove that the COVID PCR test is used for human cloning. Rather these tests are used for gene cloning which helps in detecting the presence or absence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Also, cloning is not a process that could possibly take place in a living person.

The research paper that was referred to in the video was published in the year 2015, long before the COVID pandemic. The published study focused on gene cloning, which is entirely different from reproductive cloning. Gene cloning is the process of genetic engineering technique in which a gene of interest is located and copied (cloned) out of all the DNA extracted from an organism. Reproductive cloning is the deliberate production of genetically identical individuals.

Reproductive and therapeutic cloning is done for different purposes, even though they share many of the same techniques. Gene cloning produces copies of genes or segments of DNA. Reproductive cloning produces copies of whole animals.

Contrastingly, the Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR is a procedure in which enzymes are used to directly copy a DNA segment that contains a gene of interest in order to make millions of copies. PCR is a technique used for molecular biology by various scientists and not for reproductive cloning. These two are very different concepts.

The NHS explains that during a PCR test, a solution called a ‘reagent’ is added to the sample. If the test is positive, meaning the virus is present in the sample, then there will be a chain reaction, creating billions of copies of the genetic material, which help in the detection of the virus.

Also, the National Human Genome Research Institute states, “Despite several highly publicized claims, human cloning still appears to be fiction. Currently there is no solid scientific evidence that anyone has cloned human embryos.”

Even though there is documental evidence of animal cloning, the same can’t be found for human cloning. Therefore, this claim stands false until proven otherwise.
