When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

The most common mistakes patients make in their communication are not giving complete medical history and past treatment history, and jumping to conclusions through self-diagnosis based on internet research. Also, patients may overstate or downplay their symptoms, which can affect the accuracy of their diagnosis.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

Health literacy means how much health-related awareness is present among us. It is the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Whether it is physical or mental health, knowing about well well-being of your own body and staying away from misinformation is all about health literacy. It is an extremely important domain when it comes to patient care. Patients who are well aware of common diseases and their fatality can seek medical advice at the earliest. In a country where there is health awareness among the masses, there are chances of decreased morbidity and mortality.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

A knowledgeable patient is always a boon to the doctor. Such patients understand why and what is being advised by the health practitioner. They tend to follow the advice in the long run.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Medical misinformation can impact treatment procedures in various ways. Sometimes patients start consuming alternative medications without informing the doctor which impacts the overall treatment. Many patients seek home remedies after watching online videos, leading to more complications. If patients provide healthcare providers with inaccurate information due to misconceptions, it can lead to incorrect diagnoses, potentially causing harm or prolonging illnesses.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Very often we come across patients who cross-verify their treatment on the internet and various medical journals. Treatment protocols vary from patient to patient. This creates a huge problem as the patient starts panicking and starts doubting the doctor’s ability to treat when he/she sees some other treatment protocol mentioned in some website/article. Also, some patients trust fake messages on various apps and platforms about health.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

My advice would be to always verify or fact-check the information available on social media that claims to be medical advice provided by some eminent doctor/ WHO/ or any organisation. The Internet is full of misinformation. So in case of doubt please seek advice from your family physician or a trusted source.
