Misinformation Hurts but Knowledge Heals: Dr Mehek Malik

Just In

Dr Mehek Malik, BHMS, is an Homeopathic Consultant based in Pimpri, Pune. A graduate of DY Patil Homeopathic Medical College, she is passionate about holistic healing and empowering patients through homeopathy. After two years of internship under senior doctors, she began her private practice in January 2025.

In a conversation with THIP Media, Dr Malik highlighted the need for health literacy emphasising that it helps setting realistic expectations.

When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

One of the most common mistakes patients make while communicating with their doctor is focusing only on symptoms, while overlooking lifestyle factors and small daily habits that may contribute to their condition. They often seek quick relief for the symptoms instead of addressing the root cause.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

Health literacy in Homeopathy plays a vital role in bridging the gap between practitioner and patient, transforming treatment from a one-sided prescription into a collaborative journey of healing and awareness. It encourages active participation, as a patient’s detailed emotional and physical history forms the cornerstone of Homeopathic care. When patients understand the reasoning behind a prescribed remedy and what to expect from it, they are more likely to remain consistent and committed, which directly improves treatment outcomes. Moreover, health literacy fosters preventive and long-term wellness since Homeopathy focuses on restoring balance rather than merely suppressing symptoms. Educated patients are empowered to make lifestyle choices that support healing instead of masking illness. It also reduces fear, confusion, and misinformation by dispelling common myths such as “homeopathy is slow,” “all pills are the same,” or “you should stop if results aren’t immediate.” Ultimately, education helps set realistic expectations, strengthens trust, and makes the healing journey more effective and meaningful.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

When a patient is knowledgeable, it becomes immensely helpful, especially in holistic and individualized treatment approaches. Clear and accurate input from the patient allows for more precise prescriptions, leading to better compliance and consistency with the treatment plan. Moreover, patients who provide early reports of even small changes or feedback contribute valuable clinical insights, which can significantly enhance the overall effectiveness of care.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Relying on quick fixes or unverified advice often delays accurate diagnosis and proper treatment, which may worsen the actual condition over time. Another concern is the tendency toward self-medication, where patients use old remedies or take repeated doses on their own. In Homeopathy, this can disrupt the body’s internal balance or mask true symptoms, which are essential for guiding the right treatment. Alongside these issues, misinformation also has a strong psychological impact. It can create fear and anxiety, leading to further disturbances in the body and aggravating existing conditions. Ultimately, this distorts the natural healing pathway and makes recovery more difficult.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Many people fall for common myths about Homeopathy. One such myth is that “natural means safe,” but the truth is that not all natural substances are harmless. Another widespread belief is that “Homeopathy is slow.” In reality, it works at the pace of the body—acute conditions often respond quickly when remedies are prescribed in the right potency and duration. There is also a misconception that “Homeopathy can be taken with anything since it has no effect or interaction.” In fact, remedies can be sensitive to substances like strong smells, coffee, camphor, or mint, which may reduce their effectiveness, making proper guidance essential. Finally, some assume that “all Homeopathic medicines are the same.” The truth is that Homeopathy is highly individualized, and even for the same complaint, two patients may receive completely different remedies depending on their physical, emotional, and mental symptoms.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

The most common advice I give my patients is simple yet crucial. First, never trust anything blindly, always look at it from a scientific perspective before believing or following it.

Second, make sure the information you rely on comes from an authentic and trustworthy source. And third, avoid shortcuts that offer only temporary relief; lasting healing often requires patience, effort, and a consistent long-term approach.
