Dr Pubali Chaudhuri, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry) (IOP, SSKM), DCMH (NIMHANS, BANGALORE ) is a Neuro-Psychiatrist. She works as a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 6 years of experience. In this interview, Dr Pubali Chaudhuri talks about misinformation and the stigma it can cause, especially about mental health conditions.

When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

Patients often say ‘I have depression’ instead of saying ‘I’m sad’ or ‘feeling low’. Self-diagnosis may often be wrong or partially correct. I tell my patients to explain their symptoms with vivid examples to reach a proper diagnosis.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

To me, health literacy means the awareness and knowledge of a person about their health and the ability to identify symptoms at the earliest to enable early diagnosis and treatment. Health literacy translates into treatment-seeking behaviour, better treatment acceptance and better prognosis. Health Literacy thus leads to better treatment results. In the field of mental health, the need for health literacy is important now more than ever before as the prevalence of mental illness is on the rise.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

It’s helpful at every step. It gets easier for diagnosis, treatment process and prognosis too. Once the patient is aware, they are much more involved in their treatment and the overall prognosis is better.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Yes, it definitely does. Misinformation creates stigma & bias and even leads to poor responses to treatment.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

The most common myth that I come across would be the fear of psychiatric medicines and their side effects. Another myth is the concept of lifelong medication. The right information and awareness can dispel such myths.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

I always encourage my patients to ask questions to mental health professionals directly in cases of psychiatric health conditions instead of searching about them on the internet.
