When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

Many individuals either overstate or understate the severity of their concerns when communicating with a doctor. This happens often out of apprehension that the doctor will adjust their treatment based on how the issue is presented.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

Health literacy involves patients possessing a sufficient understanding of the disease or condition they are experiencing, enabling effective monitoring of their health status.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

A patient’s knowledge about their condition is invaluable for experts when it comes to treatment. It provides crucial insights that enable healthcare professionals to make informed decisions and tailor treatment plans effectively. When patients understand their condition, they can actively participate in their care, ask relevant questions, and adhere to treatment recommendations more effectively. This collaboration between patients and experts fosters better outcomes and enhances the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Medical misinformation affects treatment procedures by shaping patients’ perceptions either in favour of or against a treatment, regardless of its necessity.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Common myths and misinformation exist regarding eye health. Some mistakenly believe Glaucoma is untreatable, leading to neglect of necessary eye drops. Others think advanced glaucoma rules out surgery, or that glaucoma surgery inevitably results in blindness. Delaying cataract surgery until blindness occurs is also a misconception. Additionally, LASIK surgery is wrongly perceived as risky and unnecessary.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

The most common advice I give to my patients is to always verify the source of information and the credentials of the information provider.
