Medical misinformation can cost you your health: Dr Aftab Alam

Dr Aftab Alam, MBBS, DO is a consultant eye surgeon in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

Eyes are an important part of human body. It gives immense satisfaction to me when I help people to restore their vision and help them to live a life with eyes.

When is a patient easy to treat?

The task of treating patients gets easier when they trust us completely for their betterment.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

When patients are apprehensive and mostly rely on the internet more than the doctors, it gets very difficult to treat such patients.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks, etc.?

Whether it is helpful or not depends on the case at hand. Acquiring knowledge from reliable sources would definitely help patients as well as doctors. However, if the patients get their information from unreliable sources, then it becomes a problem as it unnecessarily hampers the treatment process.

How can a patient improve his knowledge about the treatment procedure (apart from consulting the doctor, of course)?

Patients can rely on authentic medical sources like medical journals and trustworthy websites to get information and improve their understanding about their treatment procedures.

How medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

It is a very big problem as medical misinformation can lead to serious health concerns. For example, a lot of false information circulates on social media that cataract can be treated just by medicines, which is wrong. This kind of false information can be very harmful for the patients.

A few advice that you always give to your patients (about staying healthy, about escaping misinformation etc.)

I always advice my patients to have confidence in their doctors and to seek medical information only from authentic and reliable sources, medical journals and experts in the field.
