When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

The common mistakes patients often make is when communicating with their doctor, such as downplaying or omitting symptoms they consider irrelevant. Many focus solely on physical symptoms like low energy, headaches, or fatigue, neglecting important mental health aspects such as stress, low mood, or sleep issues. They frequently misunderstand mental health symptoms as physical problems. Additionally, terms like ‘depressed’ are often in use without differentiating between clinical depression and temporary sadness. Using vague language, such as feeling ‘off’, without specific details can also hinder effective diagnosis. Often in fast-paced IT environment, stress and mental health issues are often dismissed as normal parts of a busy lifestyle. This oversight can lead to burnout, depression, anxiety disorders, and other conditions being misunderstood or inadequately treated, affecting the overall effectiveness of treatment.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

Health literacy means understanding basic health information and services, which is crucial for making good health decisions. It’s important because it helps patients take an active role in their own healthcare. Some also believe that psychiatric medications do more harm than good or that one can simply ‘snap out’ of depression with motivational talks or positive thinking.

These misconceptions can delay proper treatment and worsen the condition. For example, not recognizing that behavioral issues, mood & emotional dysregulation are related to mental health can lead to serious problems down the line. When patients understand their mental health conditions, they are more likely to follow treatment plans, attend regular check-ups, and take medications as prescribed.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

Basic knowledge of health conditions empowers a patient to make better choices, seek timely help, and improve their overall psychological well-being. Knowledge can dispel myths, reduce stigma, and promote more effective treatment and recovery. When a patient understands the basics of their mental health condition, it greatly improves the treatment process. Informed patients can better communicate their symptoms and follow treatment plans more effectively. You can expect the patients to engage more in their care & ask relevant questions, understand the importance of treatments, and recognize early signs of worsening symptoms. For example, someone aware of how stress impacts mental health might notice early signs of anxiety and seek help sooner.

Informed patients also adhere better to lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, proper sleep, and healthy eating, which are crucial for mental health. This leads to more personalised care and quicker adjustments to treatment plans. All of these makes a patient active participants in their treatment, leading to better health outcomes.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Misinformation can greatly impact treatment procedures by leading patients to make uninformed decisions about their health. For instance, believing myths about psychiatric medications can result in patients avoiding or discontinuing essential treatments. This can worsen their conditions and prolong their suffering. Additionally, misconceptions about mental health care can lead to stigma and discrimination, preventing individuals from seeking help when they need it most.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Many patients believe in myths surrounding mental health and medications. For instance, some think that all psychiatric medications are sleeping pills or that they life-long (medications) in all conditions. Others fear becoming dependent on medications or worry about damaging side effects. Some even believe that medications worsen their conditions or are only given to make them sleep. Additionally, there’s a harmful misconception that all psychiatric patients are violent and harmful.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

My advice to patients is to be cautious of online misinformation. I encourage them to seek information from reliable sources, like healthcare professionals, and to ask questions if they’re unsure. Patient usually google their symptoms & then relate all the worst possible diagnosis leading to illness anxiety disorders. It’s important to understand that mental health treatments are personalised to individual needs and often involve a combination of therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Open communication with healthcare providers and a willingness to learn can help dispel these myths and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

In India’s diverse communities, where cultural beliefs may influence perceptions of mental health care, combating misinformation is essential for promoting accurate understanding and effective treatment.
