Health literacy matters for everyday wellness: Dr Dhananjay Singh

Just In

Dr Dhananjay Singh holds an MBBS degree from SMS Medical College, Jaipur, and has over 3 years of clinical experience. He is currently working as a Medical Officer at a Community Health Centre under the Government of Rajasthan.

During a discussion with THIP Media, Dr Singh shared the challenges of doctor-patient relationship and highlighted the importance of health literacy.

When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

One of the most common mistakes patients make, especially in rural India, is that they don’t describe their symptoms or problems—instead, they directly suggest the treatment they want and expect the doctor to simply write it on the prescription.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

Health literacy refers to understanding the various aspects of health and wellbeing, including environmental influences, emotional wellness, physical activity, dietary habits, and the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

When a patient is knowledgeable, it significantly improves the flow of communication. It becomes easier for doctors to explain the nature of the condition, possible causes, and the treatment approach. Such patients are more likely to understand the management plan, follow medical advice accurately, and actively participate in their own care, which ultimately leads to better health outcomes.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Medical misinformation can create challenges in the doctor-patient relationship. When a patient comes in with beliefs or information that don’t match the doctor’s understanding, it can make it harder to agree on the best treatment. This gap between what the patient thinks and what the doctor recommends can lead to confusion, misunderstandings, and sometimes even wrong decisions about health care. That’s why clear communication and trust are so important in medical care.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

One of the most common myths and misinformation impacting treatment in rural India is the widespread reliance on unlicensed practitioners, often referred to as jholachhap. These practitioners typically lack proper knowledge of the patient’s condition but commonly treat everyone with IV fluids and a single injection of antibiotics, multivitamins, or steroids. As a result, when patients eventually visit a qualified licensed practitioner, they often expect the same treatment—IV fluids mixed with a yellow-colored injection—believing it to be the standard or effective care.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

The most common advice I give to my patients is to always check the source of their health information. In today’s world, where information is abundant and easily accessible, it’s important to ensure that what you read, hear, or see comes from reliable and trusted sources. Misinformation can lead to confusion, wrong self-diagnosis, and harmful practices. Consulting credible medical professionals or verified health organizations helps patients make informed decisions about their health and avoid unnecessary risks. Taking this simple step can make a significant difference in achieving better health outcomes.
