Just In

With seven years of experience, Dr Manish Taneja, MBBS, DNB, has worked at esteemed institutions such as Indraprastha Apollo and Medanta. Presently, he is contributing his expertise to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla while also pursuing a doctorate in critical care medicine.

When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

Patients usually assume that certain symptoms are more serious based on what’s bothering them more, which may not be the case for us while making a diagnosis. They almost always mess up the sequence of events, which is of utmost importance in diagnosis at times.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

An educated patient is usually my favourite type. They are proactive about their health, they understand that health is not just getting treatment on time but also has a preventative aspect to it. Health is not just about having no ailment but having an ideal milieu in your physical and mental experience. An educated patient makes us better doctors, they leave the diagnosis to us while helping us make certain decisions together since it’s their lives.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

It takes us less time to make them understand if the patients are aware of the basics of their health condition. They usually get the severity and seriousness of the situation. Some decisions are to be taken together especially while treating a critically ill, and an educated patient makes well-informed decisions.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

As a result of rampant medical misinformation, sometimes we don’t get consent for simple things like a test. This happens due to the assumption that either we are there to make money by sending them for tests, or we over-test. This often delays the diagnosis and treatment.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Since I’m a critical care physician, we encounter a lot of misinformation regarding critical illness and mechanical ventilation. If we discuss initiating mechanical ventilation or putting a loved one on a ventilator, it’s not the end of the world for a patient in most cases. However, the myth is that ventilation is only done as an end-stage therapy. Sometimes it’s about letting the illness pass with ease.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

I would suggest all the people who consult doctors for their illnesses, leave the diagnosis to the doctors while they can help us with well-informed treatment decisions.
