What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

Exploring the wide variety of Metabolic Syndrome in Indian population due to unhealthy lifestyle, eating habits & stress and giving them correct medical counselling and lifestyle goals is a satisfying job for me. I am passionate about the role Yoga and Meditation play in ones life and love taking up complicated and difficult cases where patients have lost hope.

When is a patient easy to treat?

A patient is easy to treat when s/he listens and accepts to facts and figures of his/her own current health condition and doesn’t try to change or alter the suggested line of treatment. Ignoring a health condition will never help a patient. Someone who is ready to apply what medical & lifestyle changes are being suggested by doctors is a good patient. Also coming for regular follow ups, having faith in your clinician and staying motivated are the key for success.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

Bringing his or her own knowledge, judgment about doctor, diseases and treatment makes the treatment difficult. Internet is their first doctor and misinformation their first diagnosis. They should understand that correct medical knowledge and experience can be obtained from either an expert consultant or a verified source. A doctor studies for 10 years observing different types of medical cases and learning how to handle the tough ones. Having full trust in your doctor is a must for success of both. If a patient is disrespectful, disobedient, arrogant, impatient, negative thinker, having a habit of changing doctors then it becomes difficult to treat that patient.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

If a patient has some scientific knowledge about body functioning, line of management, and how the current medicine trend is evolving, then it definitely helps. As both patient and doctors are on the same page, progress is fast, communication is much effective and we normally achieve much beyond our desired expectations.

How can a patient improve his knowledge about the treatment procedure (apart from consulting the doctor, of course)?

Read newspapers, verified medical websites and expert blogs to learn about upcoming trends and what doctors are saying. For ex: how summer heat is affecting diabetics these days. Patients are having severe dehydration and this is affecting their sugar levels. Patients can go to latest journals, researches and data published and can also keep an eye on what doctors are suggesting on social media and LinkedIn; what they are saying on all the health days and tips given by them.

How medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Misinformation is a very big problem. Half or incorrect knowledge is very harmful in medical field. This causes serious side effects and chronic problems, for ex., nowadays everyone is having low VIT D3 and they either prefer taking multivitamin by their own and want to continue medicines given by some doctor for a longer time. Vit D3 overdose causes toxicity and many bone related issues, if not taken under supervision.

A few advice that you always give to your patients (about staying healthy, about escaping misinformation, etc.)

Always read authentic correct medical information from reputed medical association’s research papers and journals. Treat any of the disease as acute or chronic in a holistic way. Not only medications but balanced diet, physical activities, changing lifestyle habits, mental wellness including yoga, meditation and regular monitoring of health is a must for survival. And on top of that ‘Choose a Doctor wisely, that makes a big difference’.
