What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

I like that I am able to help my patients using my abilities and skills.

When is a patient easy to treat?

Patients who are brave and optimistic perform better and inspire us to do better. Such patients definitely make our task easier. Those who consult us early, accept and understand the prognosis, and try to follow our advice rather than overruling us based on random advice from non-medical sources are good to treat.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

Patients who make decisions based on the internet or the opinions of relatives and do not trust the doctor are difficult to treat.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

It is helpful to treat patients who understand the steps required to achieve good health. It is easier to build trust and cooperation with patients when they understand the consequences of delaying or failing to follow certain instructions given by their doctors.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

Reliable and authentic health websites which carry extensively researched information can be read and referred to. Discussing with the doctor about your doubts and concerns regarding your health condition or treatment along with your own research is another way.

How does medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Misinformation in the age of information overload is a natural side effect. The right and the wrong get so intermixed that it becomes difficult to differentiate between the two. However, in healthcare this has a profound impact. It results in delay in seeking treatment, distrust in the healthcare system and seeking of alternates, which are harmful.

A few advice that you always give to your patients…

Effective communication is the key to keeping patients compliant. My advice always revolves around prevention, and screening. I suggest dietary and lifestyle changes, physical activity and regular health checks. With respect to misinformation, I ask my patients for the source of their information and then show them the counter view with proof. This shows that it is important to discuss about the information you gather on the internet about your health condition or treatment procedure.
