Dr Mohit Bhagwati, MBBS, DNB (General Medicine), DNB (Cardiology), is an interventional cardiologist. He holds special interest in heart failure care. He currently works at Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi as Consultant and Incharge, Acute Cardiac Care and runs the hospital’s heart failure clinic.

What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

The best thing about practicing especially as a cardiologist is the outcome for heart patients when treated promptly, compared to other sub-specialities. Attending to heart attack patients in the wee hours and performing primary angioplasty leads to patients walking out the next day in good health. This emotional experience drives to be available for our patients round the clock.

When is a patient easy to treat?

When patients are well-informed about their health condition and trust the treatment plans given by their doctors, providing care becomes easier. Some of the ideal characteristics in patients include honesty, respect towards their healthcare providers, cooperation and compliance. Obtaining medical insurance is also crucial for receiving the best medical care.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

It is challenging when we treat patients who lack knowledge or have misinformation about their health condition. For instance, in the cases of heart attack patients, timely intervention through primary angioplasty is crucial, yet patients and their families may not understand the importance of quick decision-making. The time wasted during this decision-making process can be critical, especially during the crucial first hour when quick treatment can be life-saving.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

It can be very helpful for doctors. When patients have knowledge about their health condition and treatment procedure, they tend to be more engaged in their care and follow their treatment plans better. This understanding empowers them to make informed decisions regarding their health, express concerns, and develop personalised treatment plans. This may further reduce their anxiety and stress regarding the procedure. Additionally, being well-informed allows patients to better manage their recovery and follow-up care, potentially leading to positive outcomes.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

Patients can research online from reliable sources and attend support groups to improve their knowledge about a treatment procedure. Healthcare providers should also offer patient education materials to explain the treatment. It is essential to research online from trustworthy sources and attending support groups, which can be especially useful for psychiatric illnesses or rare diseases. Additionally, seeking a second opinion from another healthcare provider can give a different perspective on the treatment procedure.

How does medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Medical misinformation can harm patients by leading to negative health outcomes, including death. It can cause delays in receiving proper treatment, unnecessary anxiety and stress and inappropriate treatments. For instance, a patient may come across an information about a message claiming that cholesterol-lowering mediations are harmful and should be avoided, and as a result, they may stop taking their prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication. This can lead to worsening of their condition and increase their risk of heart attack or stroke. There are a lot of such similar examples where patient may fall into the trap of a medical misinformation and suffer because of that. Patients must rely on reputable sources of information, such as their healthcare providers to make informed decisions about their care.

A few advice that you always give to your patients…

Stay healthy by eating and sleeping well, staying active, managing stress and avoiding smoking and drinking. Follow your physician’s advice and watch out for medical misinformation. Be cautious of claims that seem too good to be true and verify the source of information before trusting it. Use reputable sources for medical information online, and keep your physician informed about any significant health concerns and don’t make choices independently.
