What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

I get very happy when I am able to bring my patients’ sight back. I love seeing my patients happy and healthy.

When is a patient easy to treat?

I always say 50% is the doctor diagnosing and treating a patient and 50% healing happens with patients have faith in their doctors. One doesn’t work without the other. Patients are easy to treat once they connect with their doctor and have faith in them.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

Patients get difficult to treat when patients feel they know better than their doctors. Some patients don’t trust their doctors because something they read or saw on the internet. There is another type of patients who do not consult their doctors unless it gets very serious. These types of patients make our job very difficult at times.

How helpful is it to the treatment, if the patient has knowledge about the procedure, benefits, risks, etc.?

It definitely helps in managing the patients’ expectations better if they understand about their conditions.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

You can increase your knowledge about a treatment procedure is to gather information a reliable source. The best way however is to discuss about your concerns and doubts with your doctor.

How medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Medical misinformation is a very serious problem. We often get patients who land themselves into trouble by following examples of medical misinformation. I have seen in cases where surgical judgements or choices are to be made, and the patient selects choices that are deemed inappropriate based on misinformation from the internet or something that a friend or neighbor experienced or suggested. These long chains of misinformation and communication gaps lead to making simple tasks more complex with often complicated situations and poorer outcomes.

A few advice that you always give to your patients…

I always suggest my patients to have frank conversations with me and to ask for correct sources of information to do some follow up reading. Often it is perceived that doctors don’t have time, but the truth is doctors don’t have time to waste. So, if you are sincere and have your questions in order and an open mind to take your doctors opinion and knowledge, no doctor will refuse to a chance to connect with you and have a fruitful discussion.
