Dr Pratyasa Bagchi, BDS is a consultant dental surgeon. She has worked with JNM Hospital and Sanjivani Hospital in West Bengal. She now practices as a dental surgeon in her own clinic West Bengal. Dr Bagchi in an interview with THIP Media discusses about her experiences and expectations from patients and medical misinformation…

What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

It makes my day when I see that my patients benefitted from the treatment that I provided them.

When is a patient easy to treat?

Cooperation from the patients is very important. People who cooperate with their doctors and caregivers make the job of treating them easy.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

There are a lot of things that have to be taken care of after a treatment is done during the recovery process. In some cases, people miss such things and are unable to recover properly. And some people then start blaming their doctors for that instead of listening to them. This makes the job difficult for the doctors.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

If the patient is aware of the procedure, then they can cope up with the fear, anxiety of the treatment better. And we as their doctors have a better chance at explaining them properly about the treatment procedure involved.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

Patients can gather information from reliable sources on the internet as well as by discussing about their doubts with their doctors.

How medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Medical misinformation is very dangerous. It can result in very serious health consequences for a person. For example, anyone can search for medicines on the internet to treat any particular health condition. However, what people would not know is whether they have any other condition which may get worse if they consume the medicine they found online, or any other risks associated with that medicine. Also, one medicine may treat one problem of a person, but the same medicine may be risky for another person, which only a doctor will know. But people suggest medicines randomly to other people online and otherwise. This can cause major health repercussions.

A few advice that you always give to your patients…

My advice to my patients is to never depend on the internet when it is about their health. You should always go to your doctor and discuss about your concerns with them.
