Superstitions can’t cure you, your doctor can: Dr Suvendu Maji

Just In

Dr Suvendu Maji is qualified Surgical Oncologist, and he is presently working as assistant professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology, IPGMER, Kolkata.

What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

I like using my expertise to treat a variety of cancer patients, diagnose them and surgically provide them a treatment through timely appropriate surgeries.

When is a patient easy to treat?

Most patients are comfortable to treat when they have trust and faith in us. They are compliant and can be taken into confidence if they have been properly explained the treatment process.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

Some patients are too apprehensive, have orthodox idea of treatment. Such patients are difficult to treat. It is also difficult to convince and treat patients with pessimistic or nihilistic attitude. Patients with certain personality disorders are also difficult to handle.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

A knowledgeable patient is boon for a doctor as they are more likely to be compliant.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

There are many patient-friendly websites, magazine and genuine health resources they can access to improve their knowledge about their condition and treatment procedure.

How does medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Medical misinformation is serious concern. A lot of people deny chemotherapy as they feel that it causes hair loss and skin colour, which is not always true. Some patients fear biopsies as they have wrong notion that disease can spread with it. This attitude hinders early treatment. Many Patients of rural India still believe in black magic, tantras, etc. All of this is detrimental to the treatment and wellbeing of the patient.

A few advice that you always give to your patients

I ask my patients not to panic and not to believe in hearsay. I always advise them not to procrastinate treatment. I also emphasise on early qualified medical consultation and encourage patients to listen and actively participate in health awareness programmes.
