What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?
On a white board in my office, its written, “Gratitude to Grace for letting us heal, many lives in a day”. The fact that we can positively impact so many lives is my biggest thrill. As an eye surgeon, vision restoration brings such dynamic change in our patients lives, and that is truly overwhelming.
When is a patient easy to treat?
The patient who has faith! We always tell our patients to have “Hope in heart and Faith in Mind”. That is the key mantra to every good thing in life, not just medicine.
When is a patient difficult to treat?
The pseudo informed patients are the toughest to deal with as they hinder the treatment process a lot which makes our job very difficult.
How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?
It normally proves to be helpful. Also, if the patient is ready to grasp the information that we provide and understand what we are going to do, it does help in better communication. However, the best results come in patients who trust and comply with us, rather than interfering in the process with their half derived knowledge.
How can a patient improve his knowledge about the treatment procedure ?
Articles from reliable sources, youtube channels of doctors and good medical/health journals can be good sources.
How medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?
Misinformation is a serious problem. Many a times patients come to us with self diagnosis and treatment or do not comply with the treatment procedure because of something they have read. Such behaviour, for instance in the cases of ophthalmology, can lead to permanent partial or complete blindness.
A few advice that you always give to your patients
I always tell my patients to trust our years of education and experience in treating them over their 2 minute internet read.
