What is the best thing you enjoy about treating patients?

I like the human connection that I am able to make with my patients and my ability to be able to help them with problems which may seem dire to them.

When is a patient easy to treat?

Patient willing to listen to the doctor is definitely easy to treat as rest is upto us to develop a rapport and give them an understanding of their ailment and solutions.

When is a patient difficult to treat?

It gets difficult when the caregivers or family members refuse to follow the advice of the medical practitioners. This can lead to inappropriate treatment resulting in deterioration of the ailment.

How helpful is it to the treatment course, if the patient is knowledgeable about the treatment procedure, benefits, risks etc.?

It is very helpful. Patients are able to address their concerns better if they have certain amount of knowledge about their condition. This also brings a certain sense of engagement in treatment, which further helps in the treatment.

How can a patient improve their knowledge about the treatment procedure?

Mostly patients do end up searching about their conditions on the internet. However, they should necessarily discuss their gathered information with their healthcare practitioners so that they don’t fall prey to wrong information.

How does medical misinformation act as a problem in the overall treatment procedure?

Medical misinformation is a very big problem. Based on the fact that there are no invasive or needle-based tests or radiological scans, which can tell about neurochemical changes in the brain, medical science is at times unable to explain the biological basis of psychiatric disorders. As a result, the stigma related to the disorders is seen. This stigma further leads to myths and misconceptions thereby affecting the treatment process leading to serious consequences of unchecked ailment. We can deal with this only by spreading health literacy in the society.

A few advice that you always give to your patients…

I advise my patients to always discuss their concerns regarding their treatment or illness with healthcare experts instead of just reading and believing something that they found on the internet. Also, if you are getting treatment for something, never stop or adjust your medicines without discussing with your doctor.
