Dr Viral Patel is a Gynaecologic Oncologist (Senior Consultant and Robotic Surgeon) at HCG Cancer Centre Ahmedabad. He has an experience of over 10 years and more than 1000 Gynaecological cancer surgeries. He is the first registered Gynaecological Oncologist in Gujarat. His expertise lies in Robotic Surgery and Advance Cytoreductive surgery for Gynecological Cancers (uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer). In this interview, Dr Viraj J Patel spoke about various challenges that occur due to medical misinformation and lack of health literacy.

When a patient explains to you about their health problems, what are the most common mistakes they make in their communication?

One prevalent error patients often make is their lack of knowledge about the symptoms that should raise alarm. Many individuals fail to recognise the warning signs associated with certain conditions or illnesses, potentially delaying necessary medical attention. This lack of knowledge can hinder timely intervention and impact the effectiveness of treatments.

What does health literacy mean to you, and why is it important in patient care?

The significance of health literacy lies in its ability to facilitate the early detection of illnesses like cancer. By possessing sufficient knowledge and understanding of health-related information, individuals are more likely to recognise the early signs and symptoms of cancer. This awareness enables prompt medical intervention, increasing the chances of successful treatment and improved outcomes.

If a patient is knowledgeable about the basics of their health condition, how helpful is it for the overall treatment procedure?

A simple comprehension of the treatment technique can be quite beneficial to patients. It enables people to actively participate in their own healthcare decisions, have informed discussions with healthcare experts, and ask relevant questions.

How much can medical misinformation impact treatment procedures?

Medical misinformation can have a serious impact on the treatment. When patients are given inaccurate or misleading information about their disease or treatment options, it can have several negative repercussions.

What are the most common myths or misinformation you see your patients falling prey to?

Some of the common misinformation or myths that I have across are ‘Ayurveda can treat cancer’ and ‘Cancer means death and no treatment can save if someone gets cancer’.

What is your most common advice to patients to stay away from health misinformation online?

I advise my patients to always read genuine health media articles and never believe in inauthentic information on social media platforms.
