We see a lot of brands of soaps, shampoo and other self-care products but not all of them are good. The hero of our story experienced something similar. To solve this problem, she made a soap at home for her daughter and took an initiative to make the product available to others, becoming an entrepreneur.

Sheetal Kabra

Forty-three-year-old Sheetal Kabra, who lives in Hyderabad, was bathing her daughter one day when she noticed her skin peeling off from a lot of areas. She got worried because her daughter’s skin was dry and had started peeling off despite oil massages. Besides, her skin was also itching. Sheetal researched about the components of various cosmetic products like shampoo, oil, soap, etc. that her daughter used. She realised that the skin problem was caused by the soap that she used. She immediately stopped her from using all the products and her daughter’s skin got better.

Commencing a new venture in 2013

Sheetal said that when she saw her daughter’s deteriorating skin condition, she feared that she would develop eczema and hence wanted to test any product before use. In 2013, she started her own brand named ‘Earthy Sapo’. She informed that the products of the brand are made in a completely natural way, and they are quite effective against eczema. According to Sheetal, these soaps don’t guarantee to kill eczema but can certainly reduce some skin problems.

Using her own product

Sheetal said after making her first soap, she herself used it and gave it to her daughter and the results were good on both. The ingredients of the products are easily available, even in our kitchens. The products have oils like coconut oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil or rice bran oil. They also include various kinds of butter. “The acid and fat in vegetable oil react with sodium hydroxide and make soap and glycerin. There are chemical reactions in all of them”.

Livelihood for eight women

Sheetal started her business from home, and now she has eight women working with her. “‘Earthy Sapo’ also makes shampoo from reetha, shikakai and multani mitti. It also manufactures cream from coconut, neem, etc.”, informed Sheetal. She gets 3,000 or more orders a month. She also gets orders from US, Canada and Malaysia. The price range of the soaps starts from Rs 260. Sheetal has also made her own website and Instagram page for ‘Earthy Sapo’.
