The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way of thinking of this generation a lot. We saw a lot of transformations after being confined in our homes for nearly two years, even with our lifestyles. One of these changes gave way to a term ‘Goblin Mode‘ as the Oxford word of the year 2022. Among two other such words in the race, the public voted it online as the winner. So, what is ‘Goblin mode’ and what are its impacts?

Goblin mode

The word ‘Goblin’ is a fictional monstrous creature, which has been a part of multiple European folktales. But while Goblin is fictitious, ‘Goblin mode’ became a popular term as people started living their lives in an untidy manner. People in this mode wear the same dirty clothes every day, lie in bed throughout the day, have long hours of screen time, remain hooked to social media, avoid their work, etc. They tend to lack motivation to do their work, and as a result, they keep on procrastinating.

Is ’Goblin mode’ a result of the pandemic?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, people stayed indoors for a long period. Since they were not allowed to go out, laziness crept up. An attitude of ‘Why do anything because we are at home!’ took over. By the time the world came to some normality, ‘Goblin mode’ had already taken control of the lives of a lot of people. People started acknowledging happily and confidently that they were living in ‘Goblin mode’ believing that they were leading their lives on their own terms. And that would mean not working, not taking care of cleanliness around them, and by not doing the chores that are important for their healthy lives.

Negative impacts of ‘Goblin Mode

‘Goblin mode’ can affect people negatively in numerous ways.

  • People struggling with depression and other psychological issues may also not want to get out of their beds, or procrastinate their work, etc., just like those living in goblin mode. As a result, it can become difficult to differentiate between the two. Due to this, people in real need of compassion and care because of their mental health struggles may not get it from those around them. And this may further lead to the worsening of their conditions.
  • ‘Goblin mode’ discourages prioritising work. Hence, if someone is criticised over their attitude towards their work, they may consider it a personal criticism and an effort to disturb their idea of life.
  • By leading an untidy life, people may also become susceptible to diseases, which can get challenging for them in the long run.
  • People in this mode tend to isolate themselves from the outer world. In this way, goblin mode can impact the mental health of people too and push them into conditions like depression.

It is important for us to ensure that we do not get into the ‘Goblin mode’. It is normal to not want to go out, work, or act lazy occasionally. However, leading such a life for a prolonged period of time can be detrimental to your physical and mental wellbeing. ‘Goblin mode’ is more like stopping to live and yet saying that it’s a way of lifestyle. Healthy lifestyle, clean living environment, meeting people, making friends, etc. is important for a healthy life.
