A social media post claims that “Using turmeric and ghee is more effective than insulin for treating diabetes.”

Turmeric and ghee claim

Fact Check

What does the scientific evidence say about turmeric and blood sugar control?

There is evidence that turmeric (and its active compound, curcumin) can modestly help in blood-sugar control, but it is far from being a substitute for insulin.

Several human and animal studies indicate that curcumin supplementation can improve markers of glycaemia: for example, a meta-analysis of 59 randomised controlled trials found that curcumin/turmeric improved fasting blood sugar, HbA1c (a long-term blood sugar marker), fasting insulin and insulin resistance. However:

  • The improvements were modest (for example HbA1c improved by about 0.3% in that meta-analysis).
  • Many studies were small scale, or short term, or in animal models rather than large long-term human trials.
  • Importantly, none of the studies show turmeric replacing insulin therapy or being adequate as a standalone treatment for insulin-deficient cases (for example in type 1 diabetes or advanced type 2).
  • One study in healthy subjects found that turmeric increased insulin levels but did not lower plasma glucose.

So turmeric might have a role in managing diabetes (especially type 2), but it is not a substitute for insulin and standard diabetes treatments.

What does the scientific evidence say about ghee and diabetes management?

The evidence that ghee specifically improves diabetes outcomes is weak, limited and does not support replacing insulin or standard therapy.

One small “intervention” study cooked white rice with ghee in type 2 diabetes patients and found a reduction in HbA1c over 3 months, but that’s not the same as showing ghee is a therapy for diabetes and there may have been many other factors (diet, monitoring, etc.) at play.

Ghee is a fat source (largely saturated fat) and while fats may slow carbohydrate absorption (in some contexts), that’s far from equating to altering the fundamental need for insulin in many patients. Indeed, excessive saturated fat intake has other health risks (heart disease etc.).
Thus, while ghee in moderation may fit into a balanced diet for some individuals with diabetes, there is no evidence that ghee can take the place of insulin or other medically-prescribed therapies.

Dr. Durga Priyadarshini R

Dr Durga Priyadarshini R, PhD (Nutrition) said, “Many people mistakenly believe that turmeric and ghee can replace insulin. Although curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has some insulin-sensitising potential, its impact depends on factors like dosage, form, and absorption. Most research has used concentrated curcumin extracts, not turmeric powder, which contains only about 10% curcuminoids, far too little for a therapeutic effect. Even when taken with ghee, which helps it dissolve better, the body absorbs only a small fraction, around 0.16–1%. So, while turmeric and ghee is good for a healthy diet, they cannot replace insulin therapy in diabetes management.”

Can turmeric and ghee together replace insulin therapy in diabetes?

No, there is no credible evidence that the combination of turmeric and ghee is sufficient to replace insulin therapy.  Why not? Here are the reasons:

  • Insulin therapy is essential in type 1 diabetes (where the body produces little or no insulin) and in many advanced type 2 cases. Skipping or replacing insulin when it is crucial risks dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), diabetic ketoacidosis, long-term complications such as nerve, kidney, eye damage, or acute life-threatening problems.
  • Turmeric and ghee may improve some markers or support other therapies, but they do not restore full insulin production or guarantee sufficient blood-sugar control in every scenario.
  • Research on turmeric shows modest benefits when used in addition to standard care, not instead of it. For example, one RCT added turmeric to metformin-treated patients and saw improvements in fasting glucose and HbA1c over 4 weeks.
  • There are no studies, robust, large, long-term human trials, showing that turmeric + ghee alone can treat diabetes safely or effectively in place of diagnosed medical therapy.
  • Relying on unproven substitutes in place of evidence-based care risks harming your health.

What experts have to say?

Dr-Surajeet-Patra-Diabeteologist

Dr Surajeet Kumar Patra, Diabetologist based in Bhubaneswar, clarifies that diabetes is a disorder caused by the body’s reduced ability to produce or utilise insulin cannot be cured or replaced by any single herb or natural remedy, nor can these substitute insulin therapy. Although certain natural options may provide supportive effects, they should never be viewed as a primary treatment approach for managing diabetes.

Diabetologist

Echoing this view, Dr Ritesh Bansal, Founder and Senior Consultant Diabetologist at Saroj Diabetes & Research Centre in Delhi, emphasises that while dietary modifications can support diabetes management, they cannot replace prescribed medications. Making healthier food choices may help reduce dependence on higher doses of medicine, but Dr Bansal advises that any dietary changes should be made under professional guidance as part of an overall treatment plan.

The claim that turmeric and ghee are better than insulin for diabetes is false. While turmeric shows some promising effects in blood-sugar control (and ghee may have minimal support in diet), neither is a replacement for insulin or standard diabetes treatment. For safe and effective diabetes management you need evidence-based medical therapies plus lifestyle support. Turmeric and ghee may play a small role, but they must complement, not replace, insulin and the guidance of your healthcare team.
