The Claim

An Instagram post advocates soursop for cancer. It is a tropical fruit, and is a powerful natural remedy for cancer, claiming it’s far more effective than chemotherapy. It also states that chemotherapy only helps 2.3% of adults survive five years and that soursop has no side effects.

Fact Check

Is soursop 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy?

No. There is no scientific evidence to support the use of soursop for cancer. Some studies, like one from the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in 1997, showed that soursop compounds could kill breast cancer cells in lab tests, and a 2016 study in Scientific Reports found similar effects in prostate cancer cells in mice. However, these are not human trials, and no studies compare soursop directly to chemotherapy. The claim of being 10,000 times stronger is an exaggeration without any scientific basis.

Dr Akanksha Chhabra

To understand whether soursop could replace chemotherapy, we spoke to Dr Akanksha Chhabra, Medical Oncologist at Max Healthcare, New Delhi. She explains, “Soursop is often talked about online, but we need to be careful. Some studies in labs have shown that it may affect cancer cells, but that’s far from enough to say it works in real patients. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, is a well-established treatment that’s been tested for safety and results. We need stronger scientific proof before even thinking of soursop as a reliable option.”

We also reached out to Dr Pooja Khullar, Radiation Oncologist at Dharamshila Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, for her views. She shares, “It’s easy to be drawn to natural remedies like soursop, but there’s no strong evidence that it can treat cancer in humans. What works in a lab doesn’t always translate to success in real-world treatment. Depending only on such remedies might delay proper care and let the disease progress. Cancer treatment should always be based on methods that are clinically proven and guided by specialists.”

Does chemotherapy only help 2.3% of adults reach five-year survival?

No, this is misleading. The 2.3% figure comes from a 2004 study in Clinical Oncology by Morgan, Ward, and Barton, which estimated that chemotherapy contributes to five-year survival in 2.3% of all adult cancer cases in Australia. This does not mean chemotherapy only helps 2.3% of patients who receive it. The study looked at all cancer patients, including those who don’t receive chemo. For specific cancers like breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or testicular cancer, chemotherapy can increase survival rates by 5-10% or more, depending on the stage and type. Misrepresenting this statistic can unfairly downplay chemotherapy’s role in effective cancer treatment.

Has soursop been proven to target cancer cells for generations?

No. Soursop has been used in traditional medicine in places like the Caribbean and South America for various health issues, including cancer. However, traditional use does not mean it’s proven to work. No historical or scientific evidence shows that soursop effectively targets cancer cells in a way comparable to modern treatments. While cultural practices are valuable, they need scientific validation to confirm safety and effectiveness for cancer treatment, which soursop lacks.

Does soursop have no side effects?

No. Contrary to the post’s claim, soursop can have serious side effects. It contains a compound called annonacin, which studies, such as one from the French West Indies, link to neurological problems like movement disorders similar to Parkinson’s disease. Frequent or high consumption may also harm the kidneys and liver. While eating soursop fruit in moderation is generally safe, using it as a cancer treatment without medical guidance could be risky.

Is prevention through soursop better than conventional cancer treatments?

No. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can help prevent cancer, and soursop is rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support general health. However, for those already diagnosed with cancer, proven treatments like chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation are often essential. Relying on soursop instead of medical care could delay treatment and worsen outcomes. Prevention is important, but it’s not a substitute for professional cancer care.

In summary, there are some health benefits, but using soursop for cancer is not a proven cure. It cannot replace treatments like chemotherapy, and relying on such remedies can be risky. Instead of trusting social media claims, it’s safer to follow medical advice from qualified doctors. Cancer is serious, and treating it requires proven methods. So, stay informed, ask questions, and rely on trusted sources like your healthcare provider. Your health is far too important to risk on unproven promises.
