Fact Check

Does maggi cause blood deficiency, bone pain, dementia, swelling in organs, or hearing problems?

No, there’s no scientific proof that eating Maggi directly causes these serious health issues.

A lot of scary claims float around the internet that Maggi noodles can lead to blood deficiency (anaemia), bone pain, memory loss (dementia), kidney or liver swelling, or even hearing loss. But let’s set the record straight: there’s no solid medical evidence to support these direct links.

What’s more accurate is this: Maggi is an ultra processed food, low in iron, calcium, and essential nutrients. If someone eats it frequently and replaces fresh meals with it, over time, their body may miss out on what it truly needs, like iron for blood health, or calcium and vitamin D for bones. That deficiency might eventually lead to tiredness, weak bones, or poor concentration, but not because of Maggi itself. It’s the lack of variety in the diet that causes the problem.

Also, claims about swelling in the liver or kidneys and hearing issues are unproven. Unless Maggi is contaminated, which is rare and heavily monitored now, it won’t directly damage your organs.

To sum up: Maggi noodles side effects can come from overuse and poor diet habits, not from a single pack. Eat it now and then? No problem. Eat it all the time instead of real food? That’s when trouble can begin.

We asked dieticians

Dr Swati Dave, Phd in Food and Nutrition

Dr Swati Dave, PhD in Food and Nutrition, said “There is no scientific evidence to suggest that occasional consumption of Maggi or other instant noodles can directly cause blood deficiency or hearing loss. The problem arises when such foods replace nutritious meals on a regular basis.”

Aditi prabhu

Aditi Prabhu, Clinical & Sports Dietitian-Nutritionist and Founder of NutroDynamix said “Claims like dementia or organ swelling from eating Maggi are exaggerated. However, eating it too often may lead to poor nutrition over time, especially if it replaces balanced meals in growing children.”

Why eating maggi every day might be a bad habit, even if you feel fine?

Yes, eating Maggi daily isn’t a good idea, even if you don’t feel any effects right away.

Maggi noodles might be quick and tasty, but they are not built to nourish your body. Each serving is low in fibre, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. This means your stomach may feel full, but your body is left undernourished, like filling your petrol tank with water.

Also, the instant noodles are mainly made of refined flour (maida), which digests quickly and doesn’t keep you full for long. Without fibre and protein, your body doesn’t get the support it needs for good digestion, energy, or growth. Over time, relying too much on such meals can weaken your overall food habits.

Children and teens, in particular, may form unhealthy eating patterns if instant noodles become a daily routine. These patterns, like skipping whole foods, fruits, and vegetables, can impact long-term health, even if there are no signs today.

In short, Maggi noodles side effects may not be immediate, but they can silently add up when eaten regularly.

What really happened in the maggi lead case, and is it still a concern today?

No, lead in Maggi is no longer a safety concern, here’s why.

In 2015, Maggi noodles were pulled off shelves in India after reports claimed they contained excessive levels of lead and added MSG (monosodium glutamate). This sparked widespread panic, especially among parents. But what really happened?

Several state-run labs found lead levels that crossed the permissible limit. Nestlé, the manufacturer, was asked to withdraw the product, and Maggi faced a nationwide ban. However, independent lab tests later showed that Maggi was safe, and the Bombay High Court lifted the ban.

Since then, Maggi noodles have gone through more frequent quality checks. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) also monitors its production closely.

So, while the scare was real, current batches of Maggi noodles are considered safe to eat when it comes to lead. But remember, safety from lead doesn’t mean it’s healthy overall.

How maggi can be made less unhealthy at home?

Yes, you can make Maggi less unhealthy with a few easy tricks.

Start by adding fresh vegetables, like peas, carrots, spinach, or capsicum. These bring in fibre and vitamins. If you’re making it for kids, sneak in some boiled dal, egg, paneer, or tofu for protein.

Another tip? Use only half the tastemaker sachet, which is high in salt and preservatives. You can make your own masala mix with turmeric, cumin, and chilli powder.

Lastly, avoid frying Maggi or double-cooking it in butter or ghee. Stick to simple boiling, and skip the unnecessary fat.

These small steps don’t make it a health food, but they do help cut down on the negatives.

Can Maggi be part of a child’s diet, or should you avoid it altogether?

Yes, Maggi can be an occasional treat for kids, but not a regular meal.

Dr Shashank Jain

Dr Shashank Jain, MBBS, MD (Paediatrics) said , “If you’re a parent wondering whether you should ban Maggi from your home, here’s the truth: it’s okay to have it once in a week, but it shouldn’t become a meal replacement or lunchbox staple.

When choosing Maggi or any instant noodle, read the label. Look for the sodium content (salt) and check the serving size. A single pack may look small, but it often contains nearly 40% of a child’s daily salt allowance.

Instead of cutting it out entirely, think about smarter swaps. Opt for whole wheat or millet-based noodles when possible, or add a handful of oats to the Maggi while cooking. Even better, alternate with home-cooked meals like poha, upma, or paratha rolls.”

Final Thoughts
Maggi noodles aren’t poisonous, but they aren’t nourishing either. The real problem lies in how often and how blindly we eat them. Occasional indulgence is fine, especially when paired with vegetables or protein. But making it a daily habit? That’s where the Maggi noodles side effects creep in.

By staying informed and making thoughtful choices, you can still enjoy your favourite comfort food, without compromising your health.
