Quick Take
A viral social media post on Facebook claims that Amitabh Bachchan is in the ICU with critical liver damage. After a thorough review, we found this claim to be false.

The Claim
A Facebook post states: “Sad News for Bachchan Family as Amitabh Bachchan admitted to ICU after 75% Liver damage, and is critical.”

Fact Check
Is Amitabh Bachchan currently in ICU?
No. There is no credible evidence from reliable news sources or official statements confirming that Amitabh Bachchan is currently admitted to the ICU. Recent reports from 2024, including a fact-check by India TV, debunked similar claims about his health deteriorating or being hospitalised. These claims often rely on outdated or manipulated images, like those from 2005, to mislead the public. Bachchan has been active on social media, sharing updates about his work and public appearances, with no mention of recent hospitalisation.
To further verify the visuals used in the post, we conducted a reverse image search. Out of all the images, we could confirm the origin of one: the photo of Aishwarya Rai, which is from her father’s funeral held on 19th March 2017, as reported by multiple news outlets and visible in archived news footage on YouTube.
Similarly, there were false claims stating that Bharti Singh is hospitalised in the ICU, and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a ventilator in a hospital. These are equally false.
Does Amitabh Bachchan have 75% liver damage?
Yes, but this is not new. Amitabh Bachchan has publicly shared that he contracted Hepatitis B during a blood transfusion after a near-fatal accident on the set of his film Coolie in 1982. This led to liver cirrhosis, a condition where scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, reducing its function. He has stated that 75% of his liver is damaged, leaving him with 25% functionality. However, this information dates back to at least 2019, when he discussed it during a Hepatitis B awareness campaign. There is no evidence suggesting his condition has recently worsened to a “critical” state.
Such misleading narratives about Amitabh Bachchan are not new. Social media platforms are often flooded with false claims, ranging from fabricated health updates to AI-generated videos showing him endorsing miracle cures for conditions like prostate issues. These are entirely fake and designed to deceive fans and boost engagement.
Can someone survive with 25% liver function?
Yes. The liver is a remarkable organ that can function even when significantly damaged. Medical experts note that a person can survive with as little as 10-20% of liver function, as the liver can regenerate and adapt over time. Bachchan himself has highlighted the importance of regular check-ups, which have helped him manage his condition for decades. Cirrhosis, while serious, does not automatically mean a critical state or immediate need for ICU care, especially if managed properly with medical guidance.
What are the general symptoms of severe liver damage?
Symptoms of severe liver damage, often seen in advanced stages like decompensated cirrhosis, can include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), swelling in the legs, ankles, and abdomen (ascites), easy bruising or bleeding, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and confusion or memory problems (hepatic encephalopathy). It’s important to remember that early liver damage may not show any noticeable symptoms, which is why regular check-ups are crucial, especially for those at risk.
THIP Media Take
The claim that Amitabh Bachchan is currently in the ICU with critical liver damage is false. While Bachchan has a known history of liver damage due to Hepatitis B, this is not a recent development, and there is no evidence of a current ICU admission. His condition has been managed for years, and recent fact-checks confirm he is not in critical health. Fans should rely on verified news and official statements to avoid falling for misleading social media posts. We encourage everyone to stay informed and approach alarming health claims with caution.
