Fact Check

What precisely are kidney stones?

Kidney stones, formerly referred to as renal calculi, are solid aggregates composed of minerals and salts that develop in the kidneys. The primary constituents of these kidney stones are either struvite, uric acid, or calcium oxalate. These usually surface when urine becomes concentrated, facilitating these substances to aggregate. The condition is often rather prevalent; the risk may be increased by high salt intake, insufficient water consumption, difficulty controlling weight, and certain metabolic conditions.

While smaller renal calculi are asymptomatic, larger ones may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Renal colic is its distinguishing trait. Usually, the pain originates in the back or side and spreads to the lower abdomen or groin.
  • Frequent urination or a burning sensation while urinating
  • nausea or vomiting;
  • blood in the urine;
  • An infectious case may be indicated by fever and chills.

Identifying the right symptoms makes it easier to contact a specialist for early identification and adequate pharmacological intervention.

Can barley water dissolve existing kidney stones?

Barley water is a traditional recipe prepared by boiling jau, or barley grains, in water. The resultant strained preparation is considered to be beneficial for its high fibre, antioxidant, vitamin, and mineral content. This is because barley water might possess modest diuretic characteristics that enhance urinary output and may potentially help the body in eliminating waste. Additionally, it might aid in the process of urine alkalinisation, which can lower the risk of uric acid stones.

While optimal hydration and increased urine volume are essential in reducing the risk of renal stone development, current scientific evidence does not support their role in the dissolution of existing kidney stones.

Dr Sharad Malhotra, Gastroenterologist

Home remedies may be helpful for urinary or digestive health; however, Dr. Sharad Malhotra, HOD Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Therapeutic Endoscopy, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, cautions against using them as a long-term treatment for kidney stones. Furthermore, Dr. Malhotra asserts that because these unreliable remedies lack substantial scientific backing, they shouldn’t be utilised in place of conventional medical therapies for renal calculi.

Barley water can help reduce stone recurrence and promote overall renal health, but it cannot be a substitute for evidence-based medical therapy for renal calculi.

Should one depend on home remedies for kidney stones?

Given their dread of recurrence, high-risk patients are compelled to use unverified home remedies. While some of these treatments may provide short-term symptom relief, it is a frequent misconception that they can cure kidney stones. Furthermore, the lack of comprehensive clinical studies to establish the optimal dosage for these natural remedies poses further questions concerning their effectiveness.

Dr. Archana Daftardar

This is further supported by Dr. Archana Daftardar, Consultant Nephrologist and hypertension and transplant physician at Renova Hospitals in Kompally, Hyderabad, who emphasises that there are a lot of myths regarding kidney stone prevention and management. Unvalidated natural treatments may seriously worsen the condition rather than improve it. The best course of action is to consult with licensed allopathic or Ayurvedic doctors.

Therefore, depending only on unproven solutions may cause difficulties and delay the necessary therapy. Renal stones necessitate accurate diagnosis and tailored management. Home-based interventions should only be used as supportive care under professional supervision; medical evaluation is necessary to determine the best course of action.

Are there any risks or side effects of drinking barley water?

Barley water is usually considered to be healthy when consumed in moderation. However, due to the presence of gluten, barley may not be suitable for those with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity. Moreover, excessive consumption of the preparation may result in digestive discomfort.

Another crucial factor to take into account is that individuals with kidney-related illnesses may benefit from fluid restriction. Consequently, overconsumption should be avoided by such individuals. Most importantly, people who are allergic to barley shouldn’t consume it.

Despite being fairly beneficial, it should be taken as per individual requirement, preferably under medical supervision.

How are kidney stones managed?

Based on the morphological traits, anatomical location, and chemical makeup of renal calculi, the following therapeutic approaches have been put forth:

  • Symptomatic small-sized stones are frequently addressed with enhanced fluid intake and prescribed painkillers.
  • Renal stones above 5 mm may become obstructive; alpha-blockers are required in conjunction with medical expulsive therapy. In the absence of their spontaneous passage, procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may be employed.
  • Rarely, open surgical intervention may be recommended.
Dr Ganesh Srinivasa Prasad, Nephrologist

Adding to this, Dr. Ganesh Srinivasa Prasad P, consultant nephrologist at Narayana Health City in Bengaluru, states that kidney stones are common in tropical countries due to dehydration and that the composition of the stones usually determines their course of treatment. Even though there are no home cures for kidney stones, the risk can be effectively reduced by drinking enough water, consuming meals high in calcium, avoiding foods high in oxalate, and minimising salt intake. Restricted consumption of animal products, sugar, alcohol, tobacco, and carbs might help reduce the incidence of uric acid stones.

Please be advised that skipping the recommended therapeutic course may worsen symptoms, raise the risk of severe infections, such as hydronephrosis and UTIs, and even cause renal failure, jeopardising overall wellness. As a result, immediate assessment and intervention are essential.

Conclusion

Barley water can be a beneficial supportive dietary measure for renal stone prevention. This could be attributed to its hydrating and alkalinising characteristics; however, it cannot take the place of the tried-and-true kidney stone medication. Those who suspect renal calculi should consult a medical expert immediately for an accurate evaluation and appropriate therapy.
