The Claim
“Omicron was the name of a 1999 video game by Microsoft (Bill Gates) about demons pretending to be humans and harvesting their souls….I’ll just leave that right here…” reads a social media post. The post can be seen here, and here.
Fact Check
Does the Omikron video game have a connection to Covid-19 pandemic?
No. The misinformation arises from the same pronunciation of ‘Omicron’ virus and ‘Omikron’ video game. However, both the words are spelt differently.
The World Health Organization (WHO) uses Greek letters to name the coronavirus variants. The word ‘Omicron’ is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet has ‘c’ while the video game ‘Omikron’ has ‘k’ in the spelling.
The Healthy Indian Project (THIP) has also addressed the claim about WHO skipping two Greek alphabets while naming Omicron to avoid naming after the Chinese President here.
Was the Omikron video game built by Microsoft?
It is not true. The video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul was built by a French company called Quantic Dream and published by Eidos Interactive. In 1999, Quantic Dream released the video game on the Microsoft Windows Platform. It is a combat game set in a city called Omikron. The goal of players is to prevent demons from capturing the souls of their characters.
