A social media post claims that the application of sperms on the face can reduce wrinkles, prevent acne and moisture the face. We fact-checked and found this claim to be False.
A Twitter post claims that sperm can be used to reduce wrinkles, moisturize the face, and prevent acne.
Does semen help with wrinkles, moisturizing, and acne?
No. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that sperm can reduce acne and wrinkles or moisturize skin.
It is believed that spermine, an organic compound found in sperm contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can make spermine helpful in treating acne but there is no scientific evidence to prove it.
While semen does contain some nutrients, such as calcium, copper, magnesium, zinc, selenium etc., the concentrations are typically very low and not sufficient to have any significant effect on the skin.
Acne is primarily caused by factors such as hormonal imbalances, excess sebum production, bacteria, and inflammation. The most frequently used treatments are physical modalities, photodynamic therapy, topical therapies, and systemic therapies.
We asked our dermatologist Dr Jyothy Kannangath about treating acne at home. To this, she replied, “Majority of acne home remedies wouldn’t have a noticeable impact on your skin. The basic principle of your clear-skin routine should be clinically proven medications prescribed by a doctor. Science does not support home remedies. Occasionally, they can make acne worse, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. Consider doing some research and talking to your dermatologist before beginning any alternative or home remedies.”
Similarly, no scientific evidence proves that sperm can reduce wrinkles. Wrinkles mostly happen naturally as people get older. As a person gets old, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic over time. However, certain other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, some medications and environmental and genetic factors also play a vital role. Certain treatment modalities that may help to reduce the fine lines include medications such as retinoids, dermabrasion, botox, fillers, etc.
Lastly, there is no scientific evidence to prove that sperm can moisturize the skin. Moreover, its application can do more harm than good.
It’s important to rely on scientifically proven methods and treatments for skincare concerns. If you have specific concerns about your skin, it is best to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional who can provide you with appropriate advice and recommendations.
How can applying sperm on the face be harmful?
Sperm would be within the semen, so one can’t have just the sperm. In fact, it is possible that its application on the skin can have side effects for some people. Possible side effects of using sperm on the skin include:
- Acne: Semen can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.
- Allergy: Some individuals may have allergic reactions to components present in semen. Allergies can cause skin irritation, redness, itching, and inflammation, which can worsen existing skin conditions or lead to new ones.
- Rash: Semen can cause an allergic reaction in some people, resulting in a rash.
- Infection: Semen can contain bacteria that can cause skin infections. Applying semen directly to the skin can increase the risk of introducing these bacteria, leading to infections or other skin problems.
- STIs: Semen can transmit sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as HIV and gonorrhea if there are any cuts from where the pathogen can penetrate.
Dr Aseem Sharma, DNB (Dermatology), MBA & FMUHS (Trichology & Hair Disorders) informs, “Proven skincare and anti-aging treatments have proper scientific research. A dermatologist recommends them after verifying their authenticity. It is important to rely on proven methods rather than unverified claims for skincare and beauty purposes. Everything out there does not need to go on your skin.”
If you are considering using sperm on your skin, it is crucial to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. It’s essential to prioritize safe and scientifically supported methods for skin care. Consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional can provide you with personalized advice and recommend suitable products or treatments based on your specific needs. There are many safe and effective ways to improve your skin, and using semen is not one of them.
