Fact Check

Can a kidney stone dissolve within 30 minutes after drinking muskmelon tea?

No. Kidney stones are hard crystalline structures formed when minerals in urine become concentrated and stick together. The most common type is calcium oxalate, but stones can also be made of uric acid, calcium phosphate, or other substances. These stones develop over weeks or months. They are compact, solid, and often quite dense.

For a stone to dissolve, the chemical environment in the urine must change significantly and remain altered for a sustained period. This does not happen within minutes. Even in medical settings, when doctors intentionally try to dissolve certain uric acid stones, the process takes days to weeks under supervision. A single cup of herbal tea cannot realistically change urine chemistry that quickly or dramatically. In short, a stone that took months to form cannot disappear in half an hour.

Dr Sharad Malhotra, Gastroenterologist

While certain home remedies may offer temporary support for digestive or urinary comfort, Dr Sharad Malhotra, HOD – Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Therapeutic Endoscopy at Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, advises against relying on them as a long-term solution for kidney stones. He emphasises that these approaches lack strong scientific evidence and should not replace established, evidence-based medical treatments for renal calculi.

Is there any scientific research supporting muskmelon tea for dissolving stones?

No. There are no high-quality human clinical trials demonstrating that muskmelon tea dissolves kidney stones, let alone within 30 minutes. While some fruits, including melons, contain water, potassium, and small amounts of natural compounds, none of these are known to chemically break apart established kidney stones in the human body.

Occasionally, laboratory or animal studies explore plant extracts and their potential effects on urine composition. However, laboratory findings are not the same as proven clinical treatments. More importantly, none of the available evidence supports the dramatic and time-bound claim circulating online.

When evaluating health claims, the absence of strong clinical evidence is important. If a remedy truly worked within 30 minutes, it would be widely studied, documented, and recommended in medical guidelines. That is not the case here.

Dr. Archana Daftardar

Dr Archana Daftardar, Consultant Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Transplant Physician at Renova Hospitals, Kompally, Hyderabad, highlights that kidney stone care and prevention are often surrounded by myths. She cautions that relying on unproven natural remedies may do more harm than good and could potentially worsen the condition. Seeking guidance from a qualified allopathic physician remains the safest and most appropriate approach.

Could muskmelon tea help in passing small stones indirectly?

Yes, but only through improved hydration. Muskmelon tea is essentially flavoured water. Increased fluid intake leads to increased urine output. When urine volume rises, it can help flush out tiny stones or small crystal fragments, especially if they are already on the move.

However, passing a small stone still takes time. The stone must travel from the kidney, through the ureter (a narrow tube), into the bladder, and then out through urine. This journey is often painful and can take days or weeks. Hydration supports this process; it does not accelerate it to a 30-minute event.

It is also worth noting that if a stone is too large, no amount of tea will push it through safely. Medical intervention may then be required.

Are there any stones that can actually be dissolved medically?

Yes, but only specific types, and not instantly. Uric acid stones can sometimes be dissolved by making urine less acidic using prescribed alkalinising medication. This treatment requires monitoring of urine pH and is carried out under medical supervision. Even then, dissolution takes time.

Most kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones, do not dissolve with diet or herbal drinks. They either pass naturally if small enough or require treatments such as shockwave therapy or minimally invasive procedures. Therefore, the idea of a quick herbal solution does not align with current medical understanding.

So muskmelon tea does not dissolve kidney stones in 30 minutes. At best, it contributes to hydration, which may support the natural passage of very small stones over time. Kidney stones are solid mineral deposits that require patience, monitoring, and sometimes medical treatment.

When it comes to kidney stones, evidence matters more than viral claims — and there is simply no evidence supporting this one.
