Quick Take
A social media post suggests that applying a DIY mixture containing Vaseline and clove can remove wrinkles and make the skin look younger. We fact checked and found the claim to be false.

The Claim
A Facebook post claims that, “ Applying Vaseline and clove can tighten the skin, remove wrinkles and reverse signs of ageing.”

Fact Check
Can Vaseline and clove permanently remove wrinkles?
No. There is no scientific evidence that a mixture of Vaseline and clove can permanently remove wrinkles.
Wrinkles develop because ageing involves structural changes within the skin. Over time, collagen and elastin, proteins that help keep skin firm and elastic, gradually decline. Sun exposure, repeated facial expressions, smoking and other environmental factors can further contribute to wrinkle formation.
A topical DIY mixture cannot reverse these deeper structural changes. Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, works mainly as an occlusive moisturiser. It forms a protective layer over the skin and reduces water loss. Better-hydrated skin may look smoother and plumper, making very fine lines temporarily less noticeable. However, this should not be confused with actually removing wrinkles or rebuilding collagen.

Dr Sachin Gupta, Consultant Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, cautions against relying on unverified natural remedies for wrinkles. He explains that evidence supporting such treatments remains limited and inconclusive, while clinically tested approaches have better-established safety and effectiveness.
Can clove tighten the skin or increase collagen production?
No. There is insufficient clinical evidence showing that applying clove to the face tightens ageing skin or stimulates enough collagen production to reverse wrinkles.
Clove contains eugenol, a biologically active compound with antimicrobial and other properties. However, these properties do not mean that clove functions as an anti-ageing treatment.
More importantly, eugenol is a recognised potential contact allergen. In some people, exposure can cause redness, itching, burning or contact dermatitis. A tingling or warming sensation after applying clove should, therefore, not be interpreted as evidence that the skin is “tightening”. Irritating the skin repeatedly is particularly counterproductive when the aim is to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
Can Vaseline make wrinkles look better?
Temporarily, perhaps, but they cannot reverse wrinkles. Vaseline can help improve skin hydration. This can make dry skin appear softer and smoother and may reduce the appearance of superficial fine lines for a while. However, hydration is different from structural anti-ageing activity. This ingredient does not replace the collagen and elastin lost during ageing. Vaseline may provide a soothing or refreshing effect for some people, but there is insufficient evidence that it can reverse established wrinkles.
Can repeatedly applying clove-based DIY mixtures damage facial skin?
Yes, particularly in sensitive individuals. Repeated exposure to irritating or allergenic ingredients can disturb the skin barrier and cause redness, dryness, itching or dermatitis. The risk may increase when DIY preparations contain several potentially irritating ingredients or are made in uncontrolled concentrations. Natural ingredients are not automatically safe for facial use.
Persistent skin irritation can also make the skin look dry, rough and uneven, potentially making fine lines appear more prominent rather than less noticeable.
What actually helps prevent or reduce wrinkles?
Evidence-based skincare and sun protection are more reliable. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is particularly important because ultraviolet radiation contributes significantly to premature skin ageing.

Dr Rashi Soni, Co-founder and Consulting Dermatologist, Aesthetician and Hair Transplant Surgeon at Rashi Hospital, Mumbai, explains that managing wrinkles usually begins with consistent use of a good-quality sunscreen to help prevent further sun-related skin damage. Depending on the individual, a dermatologist may then recommend topical retinoids, which can support skin cell renewal and collagen production.
Moisturisers containing ingredients such as ceramides or hyaluronic acid can also help maintain the skin barrier and improve hydration, making fine lines appear less noticeable. Lifestyle measures matter too, including avoiding smoking, eating a balanced and nutritious diet, and getting adequate sleep. For deeper or more established wrinkles, dermatologist-supervised treatments such as chemical peels or laser procedures may be considered.
Depending on a person’s skin and the severity of wrinkles, dermatologists may also recommend ingredients such as topical retinoids or procedures including chemical peels, laser treatments, botulinum toxin or dermal fillers. The appropriate treatment depends on the type and depth of wrinkles and should be selected after proper assessment.
