Ginger clove claim

Fact Check

Can ginger and clove really clean your body ‘like fire’ from the inside out?

No. The phrase ‘clean your body like fire’ suggests a dramatic detoxification process, but scientific evidence does not support ginger or clove as powerful detox agents. Instead, their benefits stem from antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which support overall health without directly ‘cleansing’ toxins.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains bioactive compounds like gingerol and shogaol. A 2024 review highlights ginger’s antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C, quercetin) that reduce oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals, which may protect cells from damage. Ginger also enhances gastric motility and reduces nausea, as shown in a 2025 Clinical Nutrition Open Science. These effects may be mistaken for detoxification, but no studies confirm ginger enhances liver or kidney detox pathways. The ‘fire’ sensation likely reflects its spicy, warming effect rather than a biological cleansing mechanism.

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are rich in eugenol, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2018 study in Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences showed cloves reduced oxidative damage in diabetic rats, supporting organ health. However, no peer-reviewed research supports cloves as a broad detoxifier. The body’s detoxification is primarily handled by the liver and kidneys, and neither spice has been shown to significantly enhance these processes beyond general antioxidant support.

Dr Swati Dave, Phd in Food and Nutrition

Dr Swati Dave, PhD in Food and Nutrition said “Ginger and clove are incredibly valuable in everyday cooking, thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, it’s important to understand that these spices don’t function like medicine when taken casually. The idea that ginger and clove can ‘clean the body like fire’ is not backed by any credible clinical evidence. While they support, they do not detoxify the liver or flush out toxins in the way many viral claims suggest. The liver and kidneys do that job naturally, and no single food or spice can replace those organs’ functions.”

Dr Divya Chauhan

Dr Divya Chauhan, Senior Ayurveda Researcher (R & D Team), DesiLLM Private Limited said “In Ayurveda, each person’s unique “prakriti” means ginger and clove affect everyone differently, not as a universal detox. They boost “Agni,” the digestive fire, enhancing metabolism and digestion to help the body eliminate toxins naturally. However, too much can disrupt balance, especially Pitta dosha, causing issues like skin irritation or overheating. Overusing these spices as supplements, not food, may also lead to stomach issues like grahani or IBS-like symptoms. Moderation is key, and don’t fall for exaggerated claims.”

Dr Thulasi K

Dr Thulasi K, BAMS, MD (Ayurveda)Dr Thulasi is currently associated with Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala and Punarjani said “It depends upon the state of digestive tract or koshta. If you are a person with difficulty in digesting heavy meals it would benefit. But if you are a person with acidity and heart burn – it can backfire. So every home remedy or medicine is subjective.”

Is ginger or clove a natural testosterone booster?

Maybe. Ginger shows potential as a testosterone booster, but evidence is limited to animal studies and small human trials. A 2018 review in Biomolecules analyzed in vivo studies, primarily on diabetic rats, and found ginger increased serum testosterone by enhancing luteinizing hormone (LH) production, increasing testicular cholesterol (a testosterone precursor), reducing oxidative stress, and improving testicular blood flow. Mechanisms include boosting antioxidant enzymes and normalizing blood glucose. A study reported a 17.7% testosterone increase in infertile men taking ginger, but the study’s small sample size and lack of detailed methodology limit its reliability. No robust human clinical trials confirm ginger’s effects in healthy men.

Cloves have even less evidence. A 2004 study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that a 50% ethanolic clove extract increased sexual behavior in male rats, suggesting a possible testosterone boost.

Both spices may indirectly support conditions linked to testosterone production by reducing oxidative stress, but direct testosterone enhancement in humans lacks confirmation.

Sports Nutritionist

Manasi Banduni, Senior Nutritionist at Clinic Living Plus, Bangalore, said “I often see people turning to ginger and clove benefits with the hope that these will boost testosterone or detox the body overnight. But that’s an oversimplification of how nutrition works. Ginger does have some emerging evidence. But the human data is still early and limited. Similarly, cloves are high in antioxidants and useful in managing oxidative stress, which could theoretically benefit hormonal balance but we can’t label them as natural testosterone boosters based on a few small-scale studies. It’s essential to use them as part of a varied, balanced diet rather than as shortcuts to health goals.”

Can consuming ginger and clove improve skin health?

Maybe. Ginger and clove, two widely used spices, offer potential benefits for skin health due to their rich antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. However, as their effects have been studied in controlled lab settings and are dose-dependent, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional before using them.

Ginger, containing bioactive compounds like gingerol and shogaol, helps combat oxidative stress, which can prevent premature aging, wrinkles, and UV-induced skin damage, as demonstrated in a 2022 study .

Its anti-inflammatory effects, noted in a review, may reduce inflammation associated with acne, psoriasis, or dermatitis. Additionally, a study showed ginger’s ability to enhance wound healing by promoting collagen synthesis.

Clove, rich in eugenol, boasts one of the highest antioxidant capacities among spices, protecting skin from free radical damage, as per a 2021 study. They also provides mild anesthetic effects, reducing itchiness

While generally safe in moderation, ginger may interact with blood thinners and undiluted clove oil can cause burns. Incorporating ginger and clove into a balanced diet or skincare routine may improve skin health, but consultation with a healthcare professional is advised for chronic conditions or high doses.

What’s the right way to use ginger and clove?

Ginger: Consume 3–4 grams daily (fresh, powdered, or in tea) for benefits like nausea relief or anti-inflammatory effects. Animal studies used higher doses (10–15 grams of powdered ginger) for testosterone effects, but these are untested in humans and may cause side effects like heartburn. Ginger may interact with blood thinners, so consult a doctor if on medication.

Cloves: Use sparingly in food, tea, or as ground powder (0.5–1 gram daily). Low doses of clove oil (a few drops) may offer benefits, but high doses risk toxicity, particularly liver damage. Avoid clove oil in children and consult a healthcare provider before therapeutic use, especially for testosterone goals, due to limited human evidence.

Dr Almas Fatma, General Physician

Dr Almas Fatma, General Physician, from Navi Mumbai, said, “As a physician, I encourage my patients to enjoy spices like ginger and clove as part of a healthy diet, but I caution them against exaggerated claims seen online. Detoxing, for example, is a natural process handled efficiently by the liver and kidneys. No herb or spice ‘burns out’ toxins from the body like fire. When it comes to testosterone or hormone-related claims, most of the studies cited are conducted on animals, and very few are reliable human trials. People must understand the difference between food-based support for overall health and clinical treatment. These spices support wellness but are not substitutes for medical therapies.”

 Final word

Ginger and clove benefits have long been loved in kitchens and traditional medicine for good reason. They’re tasty, warming, and can support digestion and immunity. But claims that they ‘clean your body like fire’ or boost testosterone like magic potions are overblown. Use them mindfully, not mindlessly—and always in the context of a healthy lifestyle.
