Fact Check

Are more than 28 per cent deaths in India due to heart disease?

Yes. In India, cardiovascular diseases have increased to affect 28.1 percent cases of total deaths till 2016 which was 15.2 per cent in 1990.

What are the primary causes of heart disease?

In India, the acute burden of heart disease is alarming for many reasons. The highest prevalence of cases with heart disease have occurred due to high cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Moreover, the effect of these factors increases with alcohol abuse and smoking.

Besides this, stress and anger are also strong factors and enemies of the heart that can cause blood clots to induce cardiovascular diseases.

Vigrx is an aphrodisiac pill whereas Dr X is a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction. Both pills can have side effects that can cause heart disease. However, no study suggests that these pills are causing heart disease among people in India.

Also, a high protein diet is related to heart disease as it can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease among people. However, there are no studies that suggest a high protein diet is causing heart disease in the Indian people.

Dr Ruchit Shah

Dr Ruchit Shah, Consultant Cardiologist, Masina Hospital, Mumbai, explained it further, “Of late, we have witnessed a lot of individuals in their 30s and 40s with chest pain and a major heart attack. The reason could be our faulty lifestyle, staying awake at night, not following a healthy routine, junk food, high salt, high fat diet, smoking, alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle”.

The Covid-19 has increased the Thrombogenicity of blood, which means the blood becomes thicker to form clots. As a result, we are facing an increase in the number of cases of heart attacks amongst the younger population. The solution to this is very simple: follow a healthy lifestyle which includes a low salt, low-fat diet, daily exercise, walking, climbing the staircase, aerobic exercises, abstaining from smoking, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and most importantly, going for regular health check-ups as advised by a doctor.”
