Quick Take
Social Media Users claim that Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shows 95.58% of Omicron cases in Germany have occurred in fully vaccinated people. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False.
The Claim
A social media user claims, “JUST IN – Robert Koch Institute report released today states that 95.58% of the #Omicron cases in Germany are fully vaccinated (28% of those had a “booster”), 4.42% are unvaccinated”.
“REPORT: Over 95% of Omicron Cases are in Vaccinated People”, writes another social media user. The posts can be seen here and here.
Fact Check
What is a RKI weekly report?
RKI is a German Government agency that conducts research and releases updates in a report on a weekly basis. The reports are released in the German language and available on the website.
Did RKI report that 96% of Omicron cases were in fully vaccinated people?
RKI did not report the number. However, it gave a summary of the total vaccinated and unvaccinated Omicron cases. The report had an error in the number of unvaccinated people.
As per an RKI spokesperson, “The number of 186 unvaccinated patients in the report from 30.12.2021 was wrong, the correct number is 1,097”. The updated report can be seen here. The report claims to have fewer Omicron cases than the Delta variant in Germany. Also it did not estimate the vaccine effectiveness concerning Omicron so far. Thus the claim is false.
