The Claim

A video on social media is circulating, with the caption, “Use Vaseline and Egg and See How Your Face Will Change in 1 Night. It removed Dark Spots, Pigmentation and got rid of uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, and darkness. Visible glowy Skin in 1 night.”

Fact Check

Can the use of lemon be beneficial for the skin?

Even though lemon is a good source of Vitamin C and is an antioxidant, using lemon directly on the skin is not recommended as it is highly acidic and can change the pH of your skin. It can lead to skin irritation, dryness, and sun damage, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Dr. Sonali Kohli, Consultant Dermatology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, says, “ Lemon is a vibrant source of Vitamin C and has antioxidant and anti-bacterial flavonoid properties which are great for the skin. Vitamin C serums prepared for the face are of a particular formulation and other additions that help balance the pH. Lemon juice is highly acidic, and the Vitamin C serums we use are not citric acid but the ascorbic acid version of the lemon juice, which is beneficial for the skin and is stabilized. When a person applies lemon directly to the face, you disturb the skin’s pH and make it completely acidic. In such cases, sun exposure can lead to Phytophotodermatitis (a skin reaction). Hence, it must be avoided.

Can the use of Vaseline be beneficial for the skin?

Not always. Even though vaseline comes with a variety of benefits, using vaseline on the face is not meant for everyone. Petroleum jelly can help seal the moisture into the skin, but it might trap in oil and dirt. Not just that, some people might be allergic to it and must avoid it. Lastly, if one doesn’t clean the skin properly before using it, it can lead to fungal or bacterial infections.

Dr. Kohli further explains, “Vaseline can primarily work very well as an occlusive moisturizer. However, people with oily and acne-prone skin will have more trouble with their skin while applying Vaseline than benefit. So, the combination of lemon and Vaseline is a horrible idea. It is best advised for people with sensitive skin not to try these techniques and remedies as they can cause massive breakouts.”

Can the use of Egg on the face have some disadvantages?

Yes. The use of eggs on the face can have certain disadvantages for a few people. It can lead to skin irritation. Some people might have an allergic reaction and can experience specific symptoms such as severe itchiness, rash, hives, and breathing difficulties from using egg whites on their face depending on the severity of the disease. Similarly, if you have any recent cuts, scrapes, or wounds, the use of raw egg whites could potentially cause a secondary infection.

Can Vaseline, Egg, and Lemon facemask be beneficial for skin in removing hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and dark spots in one night?

No. No research indicates that Vaseline, Egg, and Lemon facemask is beneficial for skin in removing hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and dark spots in one night. It is impossible to get rid of any of these issues in one night, as treating them and getting rid of them is a gradual process. Apart from the potential risks, the effects will quickly dissipate once you wash the mask off your face. The purported use of this face mask lacks any scientific evidence as it is not yet clinically tested and proven to work.

As stated before, using lemon on the skin is not recommended as it is highly acidic and can cause skin irritations, dryness, and sun damage, especially if you have sensitive skin. Therefore, the claim is false.
