Fact Check

Does gond (edible gum) have scientific evidence for joint pain relief?

No, edible gum does not have strong evidence for treating arthritis or chronic joint pain.

“Kala gond” or edible gum is derived from tree resins such as Acacia species. Traditionally in Ayurveda, it is used as a strengthening agent, often given to women post-pregnancy for recovery or consumed in sweets during winters for warmth and energy. Some laboratory studies on gum arabic and tragacanth have shown:

  • Antioxidant effects – may help reduce oxidative stress, which is linked to inflammation.
  • Mild anti-inflammatory properties – possibly lowering certain inflammatory markers in animal models.

However, these effects are very limited and have not been proven in large, human clinical trials for arthritis. Unlike NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) or disease-modifying drugs prescribed by doctors, gond has no proven ability to reduce swelling, repair cartilage, or halt joint degeneration. At best, it may provide general nourishment, but it cannot be relied upon as a treatment for arthritis.

Dr Smit Dave, Orthopedic surgeon, Sterling Hospital, Orthocure Hospital, Ahmedabad

Dr Smit Dave, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sterling and Orthocure Hospitals in Ahmedabad, emphasises that total knee replacement remains the only reliable treatment for advanced knee arthritis. He notes that oils, gels, creams, or home remedies may offer temporary comfort but cannot cure the condition. Dr Dave warns people not to fall for unverified claims on social media that promote such products as substitutes for surgery in repairing knee damage.

Can joint degeneration or arthritis damage be reversed in two weeks?

No, arthritis damage cannot be reversed so quickly.

Arthritis, whether osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear of joints) or rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune inflammation), is a chronic, long-term condition. Once the cartilage (the cushion between bones) is worn down, it cannot regrow naturally. Modern medicine itself has no permanent cure; instead, treatments aim to:

  • Reduce pain and stiffness (painkillers, physiotherapy, hot/cold packs)
  • Improve mobility (exercise, stretching, weight management)
  • Slow disease progression (disease-modifying drugs in autoimmune arthritis)

Even effective interventions like physiotherapy or weight loss take weeks to months, not just 14 days, to show visible results. The claim of “pain-free movement in 2 weeks” oversimplifies a complex medical condition and risks misleading people into unrealistic expectations.

Are ayurvedic joint pain remedies truly free of side effects?

No, “natural” does not always mean “side effect free.”

The kit is advertised as having “no steroids, no side effects.” While it may not contain steroids, herbal and Ayurvedic products can still cause problems, especially if used without proper regulation. Concerns include:

  • Digestive issues: Some resins and herbal powders may cause bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea.
  • Allergic reactions: Plant resins can trigger skin rashes or breathing difficulties in sensitive individuals.
  • Drug interactions: Herbal products may interfere with prescribed medicines for blood pressure, diabetes, or arthritis.
  • Contamination risk: Independent studies have found that some marketed Ayurvedic supplements may contain heavy metals like lead or mercury, especially when not regulated by strict quality controls.

So while mild users may tolerate it, claiming that it is universally “safe for all” is scientifically inaccurate.

Does customer popularity equal medical effectiveness?

No, customer numbers and testimonials are not scientific proof.

The brand highlights “6 lakh+ satisfied customers”, but popularity is not evidence of medical benefit. Many products, from herbal oils to magnetic bracelets, are sold widely, yet scientific reviews often show little to no therapeutic effect. Testimonials are subjective, influenced by placebo effects (feeling better because you expect to), temporary relief, or unrelated lifestyle changes.

The gold standard for testing any health product is randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in peer-reviewed journals. At present, there are no clinical trials available for Vaidban Kala Gond Kit. Without this level of evidence, its claims remain anecdotal and marketing-driven.

Dr Sushant Srivastava, Orthopedic

Dr. Sushant Srivastava, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Mata Gujri Memorial Medical College and Lions Seva Kendra Hospital, Kishanganj, Bihar, shares his perspective on this Ayurvedic joint pain relief claim. He explains that successful treatment of joint pain depends on correctly identifying its root cause. Whether the pain arises from osteoarthritis, injury, inflammation, or infection, treatment cannot be effective without this understanding. Joint pain is not limited to the knees, back, or waist; it can affect multiple joints in the body. For this reason, without thorough medical evaluation, it is misleading to claim that any kit can completely cure joint pain.

Final words

The claim that Vaidban Kala Gond Kit can relieve joint pain naturally within two weeks, without side effects or surgery, is not supported by credible scientific evidence. While edible gums may have mild antioxidant or soothing properties, they cannot reverse arthritis or restore damaged joints.

Instead of relying solely on unverified remedies, people with persistent joint pain should:

  • Consult an orthopaedic doctor or rheumatologist
  • Engage in low-impact exercises like walking, yoga, or swimming
  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce strain on joints
  • Use clinically tested treatments (physiotherapy, prescribed medicines, hot/cold therapy)

Natural supplements may provide comfort for some, but they should never replace evidence-based medical care.
