Quick Take

A social media post claims that massaging your feet with ghee using a bronze bowl to release toxins works wonders for your health. It reduces acidity and cools the body. We conducted a thorough fact check and found the claim to be mostly false.

Rating Mostly False

The Claim

An Instagram video suggests that dipping a bronze bowl in ghee and massaging the feet can release toxins, reduce acidity, and heat from the body, improve sleep, and nourish nerve endings, as part of a practice called Padabhyanga. The black residue on the skin is evidence of toxins being pulled out.

Fact Check

What are the Padabhyanga benefits?

Padabhyanga is a real practice, but its benefits are limited. Padabhyanga is an Ayurvedic foot massage technique that uses oils, often ghee, to relax the body. Studies suggest it can reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote relaxation by stimulating pressure points in the feet. However, there is no scientific evidence that massaging with warm ghee and using bronze to release toxins, acidity, or heat from the body is effective. The calming benefits of bronze plate massage come from the massage itself, not from detox processes.

Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, Indore

Dr Muskan Thakur, Ayurvedic Consultant, from Indore, says, “Padabhyanga is much more than a relaxing ritual. When done regularly, especially before bedtime, it helps calm the nervous system, improve blood circulation, and support better sleep. In Ayurveda, we believe the feet connect to important energy channels in the body. By gently massaging them with warm herbal oils, we stimulate these pathways, balance the doshas, and nourish the skin and nerves. It can also help relieve fatigue, reduce stress, ease leg stiffness, and even soothe eye strain. Padabhyanga is a simple yet powerful way to restore balance and promote overall well-being.”

Can metals like bronze release toxins through the skin?

No, metals like bronze or silver cannot release toxins through the skin. The skin acts as a barrier and plays only a limited role in detoxification, mainly through sweat. However, most toxins are not eliminated this way. Scientific research shows that detoxification happens primarily through the liver and kidneys, not the skin. Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, has no proven ability to extract toxins. Claims of metals drawing out impurities lack credible evidence and are not supported by medical science.

Dr Almas Fatma, General Physician

Dr Almas Fatma, General Physician, from Navi Mumbai, explains, “There’s no scientific evidence that metals like bronze or silver can pull toxins out of the body through the skin. The idea may sound appealing, but it doesn’t match how the human body actually works. Our main organs for detox are the liver, kidneys, and gut. The skin acts as a protective barrier, not a detox tool. Rubbing metal on the skin or using it during massage might feel soothing, but it won’t draw out toxins or acidity. These claims are misleading and should be viewed with caution.”

What happens when we rub Kansa on the feet?

Kansa, another term for bronze, is used with ghee for its moisturising and soothing properties. It may soften the skin and provide a calming effect during massage, which could indirectly relax nerves, and may help in depression and anxiety. However, there is no direct scientific proof that ghee or kansa specifically nourishes nerve endings or has unique health benefits beyond hydration. The nerve benefits are likely due to the massage itself, not ghee or kansa.

Is black residue on the skin proof of toxins?

No, the black residue is not evidence of toxins. The residue seen after massaging with a bronze bowl is likely a mix of ghee, dead skin cells, dirt, or oxidation from the bronze itself. Bronze can react with oils or sweat, creating a dark film, but this is not a sign of toxins being removed. The body does not release toxicity through the skin in this way, and no studies support the idea that such residue indicates detoxification.

Similar to this, there are post claims that touching cows can remove all the toxins from the body instantly. Some even suggest that sleeping on the left side can flush out toxins. But these are false.

In summary, the claim that massaging your feet with ghee and bronze to release toxins is mostly false. Padabhyanga, an Ayurvedic foot massage, may promote relaxation and improve sleep. But there is no scientific evidence that it can release toxicity, acidity, or heat from the body. Ghee may moisturise the skin, but its role in nourishing nerve endings is unproven. Detoxification happens through the liver and kidneys, not through foot massages with bronze bowls. For relaxation, a simple foot massage with any safe oil can be just as effective without the misleading claims.
