What exactly are tobacco stains? How do they affect the teeth?
Tobacco stains, a type of extrinsic pigmentation, are usually yellow, brown, or even dark discolourations of the dental enamel brought on by the following:
Tobacco smoke constituents:
- Tar: A dark brown or black viscous compound that exhibits direct adherence with the porous tooth surface.
- Nicotine: While colourless, it usually turns yellow when exposed to oxygen, and this oxidised nicotine diffuses into the enamel pores.

Can a home remedy remove tobacco stains permanently?

Why are dubious online tobacco stain removal cures gaining popularity? Should one rely on them?

For deeper stains, dental professionals may recommend at-home bleaching with 6% hydrogen peroxide gel.

Furthermore, healthy literacy enables people to discriminate between unfounded at-home claims and proven therapeutic interventions. As a result, it is vital to recognise that enhancing tobacco consumers’ health literacy may result in greater understanding of their oral health and its prevention and management, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being.
