Quick Take

A social media post asserts that an Ayurvedic concoction may successfully cure cancers atĀ advanced stages. After verifying the claim, we discovered that it is mostly false.

Rating Mostly False

The Claim

An Instagram post by Mom Blessing Foundation is promoting an Ayurvedic recipe for stage four cancers, which is not only deceptive but can also be potentially fatal. As per the post, stage 4 cancer can be completely eradicated by boiling two cloves, one cardamom pod, one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds, and cinnamon powder in a glass of water.

stage IV cancer

Fact Check

What does the term “cancer staging” mean? Which stage is regarded as the most harmful stage?

Cancer develops when normal cells undergo genetic and molecular alterations, resulting in their unregulated growth and proliferation and impairing physiological processes. Cancer staging is the process of determining the extent to which the disease has spread throughout the body. It serves to provide consistent communication among the specialists involved in cancer management, determine prognosis, and inform therapy options. The TNM staging system is the widely used approach for the classification of the condition. The system evaluates:

  • The dimensions and the spread of the primary tumour
  • Regional lymph node involvement
  • The presence or absence of further dissemination

According to the TNM criteria, cancer is categorised into four stages. Stage I cancer is small, localised, and free of metastases or nodal involvement. Stage II includes locally progressed tumours or early nodal involvement. Stage III denotes the later stages of locally advanced cancer with more extensive nodal involvement. The hallmark of stage IV, however, is distant metastases, which indicates the cancer cells may spread to other organs.

The fourth stage is the most lethal of all. This may be because of its propensity to spread, which compels the treatment into a palliative framework that aims to relieve symptoms and impede the progression of the disease. Furthermore, systemic dissemination puts patients at risk for consequences that could significantly lower survival rates, organ dysfunction, and malnutrition.

What does Ayurveda recommend for stage IV cancer?

Ayurvedic texts acknowledge Stage IV cancer as Arbuda, a massive, systemic tumour where a dosha imbalance has overwhelmed the body’s defence and metabolic systems. The key objective of Ayurvedic therapy is to determine the root cause of an illness, and its four treatment pillars are as follows:
• Prakritisthapani chikitsa or overall maintenance of health
• Rasayana therapy for the restoration of normal function
• Roganashani chikitsa for managing the disease
• Naishthiki chikitsa or the spiritual approach

Popular medicinal blends found in Ayurveda are composed of several herbs that have been shown to have significant cancer-curing potential; from a scientific standpoint, these formulations affect various organ systems, participate in various biochemical reactions, and support the body’s defence mechanisms.

Dr P Rammanohar

Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director at Amrita School of Ayurveda, states that cancer is a complicated illness that cannot be easily cured. Every type requires a different course of treatment, which frequently includes radiation, chemotherapy, or targeted medications. There is no single herb or natural remedy for all types of cancer. While several herbs have shown potential in preliminary laboratory research, there isn’t enough conclusive data from human trials to regard them as effective medicines. It is critical to consult qualified medical professionals and rely on established therapies before implementing anything else.Ā

Ayurveda employs a tailored, multimodal approach for addressing the metastatic stage, even when curative treatment is no longer viable. This approach seeks to restore metabolic equilibrium, strengthen immunity, enhance resilience, facilitate symptomatic relief, or cleanse tissues while also enhancing quality of life.

How should stage IV cancer be medically addressed?

As per scientific evidence available, malignancy should never be taken lightly. It is important to note that there is rarely a cure at this stage; instead, contemporary medicine seeks to manage the progression of the illness, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life. This is often accomplished by a team of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, palliative care specialists, and allied health workers using a carefully crafted interdisciplinary approach.

Medical oncologists lead the systemic therapy, which includes immunotherapy, targeted medicines, and chemotherapy. The treatment plan is influenced by the type of cancer, biomarkers, and previous therapies. Isolated masses may be removed using radiation therapy and surgery.

People in stage IV frequently suffer from malnutrition and muscle loss. Therefore, individualised nutrition plans could be utilised to support ongoing cancer therapy. Furthermore, the patient undergoing therapy may seek psychosocial support that tackles existential concerns, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Additionally, palliative therapy may aid in the management of symptoms or complete pain alleviation.
Stage IV cancer is therefore not a passive condition; rather, it requires planned, scientifically backed interventions aimed at prolonging a good quality of life.

Is there a miracle cure for the eradication of stage 4 cancer?

In an era when information is readily available online, it is easy to fall victim to online miraculous remedies. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a “miracle cure”, and relying on such unproven remedies can be completely fatal becauseĀ they have not been subjected to scientific examination, clinical validation, or approval by global cancer treatment protocols.Ā

Patients undergoing treatment for persistent illnesses such as cancer may seek hope beyond conventional allopathic medication. One such unverified Ayurvedic preparation composed of fenugreek, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom has been asserted in the post. Since the mentioned ingredients are being considered for the eradication of advanced-stage cancer, it becomes critical to understand the rationale behind these claims:

  • We begin with fenugreek seeds, which are being studied because of diosgenin and other phytochemicals that cause cancer cell lines to undergo apoptosis and cease cellular division. However, these findings are confined to cell cultures, and there isn’t any evidence that they have a significant impact on human metastatic cancer.
  • Cinnamon is the next ingredient being considered because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic characteristics. Nevertheless, the spice has not been thoroughly studied in clinical settings, and its high coumarin content may be hepatotoxic.
  • Cardamom is also a significant source of bioactive compounds that may help reduce chemotherapy resistance and boost pathways related to apoptosis.
  • Last but not least, cloves contain antioxidants and eugenol that may support detoxifying enzymes. However, these findings have not been confirmed as proven therapeutic approaches for metastatic illness in human clinical studies.

Despite their preclinical indications, none of the spices—fenugreek, cinnamon, cardamom, and clove—have been proven to be effective treatments for stage IV cancer in clinical trials; depending on them as the sole option could be extremely risky, leading to toxicity, contamination, postponed treatment, or even exacerbating the ongoing condition.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma - Oncologist

This is further supported by Dr. Rakesh Sharma, Senior Consultant and HOD Medical Oncology, SHALBY Sanar International Hospital, Gurugram, who suggests that while these spices contain bioactive compounds with reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative effects, claims that they can cure cancer, especially late-stage cancer, are false and not supported by scientific evidence. It’s crucial to rely on established cancer treatments and consult with healthcare professionals. Treatment with ethanolic extracts of clove, cardamom, and fenugreek results in a marked decrease in total protein content. This suggests that these extracts may induce proteolytic activities or inhibit protein synthesis, contributing to their anti-cancer effects. There is ongoing research on combining these agents with cancer therapy.

We understand that hope is essential for fighting any disease; false hope can be harmful. Thus, relying on unreliable online miracle cures could not only endanger the lives of people with stage IV cancer, but it could also keep them from receiving the critical treatment and support they need to save their lives.

Can someone with stage IV cancer be clinically cancer-free?

Patients with stage IV cancer may be considered clinically cancer-free if there are no visible cancerous symptoms based on available diagnostic tools. This may not necessarily imply a cure because the disease may still be present at levels too low to detect even with ongoing oncological treatment.

Dr. Rakesh Sharma explains that patients with stage-IV cancer can be completely cancer-free in certain scenarios. Patients with stage-IV lymphoma, breast cancer with limited metastasis and germ cell tumours can be cured with proper treatment with a multi-disciplinary approach.

However, it is crucial to stress that recurrence is always a possibility, especially in cases with advanced-stage cancer, even when the disease appears to be undetectable.

Conclusion

Please be advised that stage IV is an advanced stage of the illness that necessitates evidence-based oncological interventions for symptomatic relief and halting the disease spread. Therefore, relying on a formulation of spices cannot be a dependable therapeutic option for malignancies.
