Quick Take
A social media post claims that sea buckthorn can prevent cancer forever and other illnesses too. We fact checked this claim and found it to be false.

The Claim
An Instagram post claims that consuming sea buckthorn can prevent cancer and eliminate all illnesses from the body. The caption reads: “Willing to prevent Cancer Forever and reverse illnesses in your body????” The post promotes a sea buckthorn juice product as a preventive solution for all diseases, including cancer, immune system issues, and common illnesses like colds and flu.

Fact Check
Can sea buckthorn prevent cancer?
No, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that sea buckthorn can prevent cancer forever.
Sea buckthorn is a nutrient-rich fruit packed with antioxidants, vitamins (such as C and E), and omega fatty acids, making it beneficial for health. Antioxidants help neutralise harmful free radicals, potentially reducing cell damage. It also contains quercetin, a flavonoid with anticancer properties, and carotenoids, which may offer some protection against cancer when combined with a healthy lifestyle.
A 2018 study found that sea buckthorn has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. It may support the immune system and help counteract chemotherapy side effects. However, its medicinal and preventive doses are unknown, and no clinical trials have been conducted—only in vivo (on animals) and in vitro (in the lab) studies exist. We need more research to confirm its effects.
Despite these findings, no research confirms that consuming sea buckthorn alone can prevent or cure cancer. Cancer is a complex disease with multiple causes, including genetic and environmental factors. Relying on a single food or supplement for prevention is misleading and unsupported by medical science.

We sought expert opinion from Dr Pooja Khullar, Radiation Oncologist at Dharamshila Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, on sea buckthorn’s cancer prevention potential. She says, “It’s important to clarify that no single food, including sea buckthorn, can prevent cancer entirely. Cancer prevention requires a holistic approach, including a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, avoiding carcinogens, quitting smoking and alcohol, limiting long-term sun exposure, and undergoing timely medical screenings. People should focus on overall health and consult medical professionals for expert guidance.”

Dr P. Rammanohar, Research Director at Amrita School of Ayurveda, explains, “Cancer is a complex disease with different types, and no single remedy can prevent or cure it. While some studies suggest that certain herbs or plants may have anticancer properties, there is not enough scientific evidence to use them as treatments or sole preventive measures. Without proper human studies, relying on such claims can be misleading.”
Does sea buckthorn reverse all illnesses?
No, sea buckthorn cannot reverse all illnesses in the body. While it has nutritional benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and potential support for skin and digestive health, it does not have the ability to reverse all diseases. Claims suggesting that it can eliminate any illness lack scientific credibility. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and autoimmune disorders require proper medical treatment and lifestyle management.
On a related note, another social media post claims that black nightshade can improve kidney health, prevent cancer, and treat multiple ailments. However, this is largely false.
What does science say about sea buckthorn and health?
Scientific studies highlight that sea buckthorn has potential health benefits due to its high content of bioactive compounds. It may support skin health, help in digestion, and contribute to heart health. However, no credible health organisation has endorsed sea buckthorn as a cure or preventive measure for cancer.
Misleading health claims like this can be harmful. Promoting a single food as a guaranteed way to prevent cancer may steer people away from proven prevention strategies, such as regular screenings, a balanced diet, physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol. Despite graphic health warnings on tobacco products, their effectiveness remains a concern. When people believe in such claims, they may delay or even avoid proper medical treatments, which can have serious consequences for their health.
For instance, some posts claim that eating turmeric while squatting can prevent cancer for life. Others suggest that consuming desi ghee and garlic on an empty stomach offers complete protection against cancer. There are also claims that practising Buddhi Mudra can prevent all types of cancer. These claims are not just misleading—they are dangerously exaggerated.
In summary, the claim that sea buckthorn can prevent cancer forever and reverse all illnesses is false. Although sea buckthorn is a nutrient-rich fruit with health benefits, there is no scientific proof that it can prevent or cure cancer. While some suggest using it for skin health, this is also not proven in humans; however, it can be part of a healthy diet for overall wellness.
