Quick Take
A popular Instagram post has been making bold claims about the healing powers of the belly button. According to this viral content, rubbing oil on the navel can treat heart disease and more. After fact checking, we found that this claim is false.

The Claim
An Instagram post claims the belly button is nature’s pharmacy, suggesting that applying certain oils to it can offer major health benefits. It lists mustard oil for heart health and eyesight, almond oil for joint pain and male fertility, tulsi oil for diabetes, castor oil for back pain and bone strength, and desi ghee for cracked heels and nerve stiffness. The post implies these simple oil remedies could replace conventional medical treatment.

Fact Check
Can applying mustard oil to the navel strengthens the heart or improves blood circulation?
No, there’s no scientific evidence supporting this claim. While some traditional medicine systems use navel oiling practices, these remain largely anecdotal without clinical proof for treating serious conditions like heart disease. The navel is essentially scar tissue from where the umbilical cord was attached before birth. Although some substances can be absorbed through skin, the navel isn’t a direct gateway to your cardiovascular system as these claims suggest.

Dr P. Rammanohar, Research Director at Amrita School of Ayurveda, explains that the idea of curing diseases by applying oils to the navel has no scientific basis and is not supported by classical Ayurvedic texts. He notes that although Ayurveda uses oils in treatments like massage, the belief that the navel serves as a healing centre for all health issues is not part of authentic Ayurvedic practice.
Can almond oil applied to the navel reduce joint pain and boost semen and sexual strength?
No, this lacks scientific foundation. Joint pain ideally requires targeted medical evaluation and treatment, as it can stem from various causes including arthritis, injury, or inflammation. Male sexual health problems involve complex physiological and psychological factors that aren’t addressed by topical oil application to the navel. While massage with oils might provide temporary local comfort, this would be due to the massage action itself, not systematic absorption through the navel.
Does applying mustard oil to the navel make dark lips pink?
No direct scientific evidence supports this specific claim. Lip color is determined by genetics, blood circulation, and melanin content. Some people may notice softer skin around the navel after applying oil. But this local moisturising effect won’t change lip colour across the body.
Will putting tulsi (holy basil) oil in the navel help control diabetes and reduce blood sugar?
No, this is medically unsound. Holy basil does contain compounds that may help with blood sugar when consumed orally. But, there’s no scientific evidence that applying tulsi oil to your navel will manage diabetes. Diabetes is a serious medical condition requiring proper medical care, dietary management, and often medication or insulin therapy. Relying on navel oil application instead of proven treatments could be dangerous.
Misleading claims about diabetes are very common, with some people suggesting that simple foot tapping can prevent diabetes and help manage the condition at home. However, this is misleading.
Does applying castor oil to the navel relieve back pain and increase bone strength?
No, this is scientifically baseless. Back pain usually results from musculoskeletal issues, nerve compression, or inflammation that require proper diagnosis and treatment. Bone strength depends on factors like bone density, calcium intake, exercise, and overall nutrition, not external oil application. So, while castor oil does have some anti-inflammatory properties when used topically, applying it to the navel isn’t a recognized method for addressing systemic pain or bone health.
Can applying mustard oil to the navel improve eyesight?
No scientific evidence supports this claim. Vision and eye health involve complex optical and neurological systems. Eye problems require professional diagnosis and treatment by qualified eye care specialists. There’s no known physiological mechanism by which oil applied to the navel could influence vision.
Does applying desi ghee to the navel heal cracked heels and prevent stiffness in veins and nerves?
No, not really. Ghee is full of health benefits and is indeed moisturising when applied directly to skin. But, there’s no scientific evidence that navel application will heal cracked heels or address circulatory or neurological issues throughout the body. Cracked heels respond to direct moisturising and proper foot care. Vein and nerve problems are systemic conditions requiring appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.

Dr Ekansh Shekhar, a Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, says, “There’s no scientific proof that putting desi ghee on your navel can heal cracked heels or stop stiffness in your veins or nerves. Cracked heels usually happen because of dry skin or too much pressure on your feet. The best way to treat them is by applying a good moisturiser directly to the heels. As for stiffness in veins or nerves, that’s a medical issue and can’t be fixed by oiling your belly button. While desi ghee can be nourishing when used on the skin, applying it to the navel won’t send it to other parts of the body. It’s always better to treat problems at the source, not through the navel.”
THIP Media Take
The claim that rubbing oil on the navel can treat heart disease and more is false. These viral claims about navel oil treatments have no scientific support and are not backed by medical professionals. While applying oil to the navel does appear in some traditional practices, the broad health benefits mentioned in the post are largely anecdotal and lack clinical evidence. For conditions like heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, or vision problems, it’s essential to consult qualified healthcare providers and follow evidence-based treatments. Traditional remedies may play a supportive role but should never replace proper medical care, especially for serious health concerns.
