Quick Take
According to a Facebook reel, a combination of rock salt and turmeric can permanently cure mouth ulcers. We analysed the claim and discovered that it is mostly false.

The Claim
A popular Facebook post titled “Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers” recommends a mouth rinse with rock salt and turmeric for managing painful oral sores. While both ingredients are considered to be safe and may provide symptomatic relief, assertions that the combination will permanently resolve mouth ulcers can be deceptive.

Fact Check
What exactly do we understand by “mouth ulcers”? What’s causing them?
Mouth ulcers, also known as aphthous ulcers or canker sores, are painful, non-contagious lesions that appear in the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions, which have white or yellow cores and red elevated borders, are usually produced by trauma, hereditary factors, persistent stress, or specific foods. In addition to being uncomfortable, they may tingle, sting, or be irritable.
These ulcerative lesions usually appear in clumps of two to four on the inner aspect of the cheeks or lips. They may occasionally form on the gingiva, tongue, or roof of the mouth, suggesting that movements of the mouth when eating or speaking can aggravate the pain.
While most mouth ulcers, are minor lesions that resolve in one to two weeks, some of these lesions may suggest underlying issues, such as vitamin deficiencies or certain systemic illnesses. If ulcers are severe and last longer than three weeks or are accompanied by additional signs, get medical attention immediately.
Should one rely on salt and turmeric for mouth ulcers?
Mouth ulcers are prevalent yet distressing; individuals may turn to home remedies for relief. One of them is a home rinse made with salt and turmeric. Given that herbal remedies are deemed safe, however, for the two to be utilised as a mouth rinse necessitates thorough evaluation.
First comes salt, a natural antiseptic that may help reduce the oral microbial load while establishing an environment conducive to infection resistance. Next, turmeric, the most widely accepted medicinal ingredient. This could be due to the presence of curcumin, which has well-documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties.
While the combination may provide short-term relief by reducing inflammation and the risk of infection, it is not a definitive or permanent solution for mouth ulcers. This is especially true for recurring or persistent lesions, which might indicate underlying concerns such as dietary deficits, gastrointestinal diseases, or autoimmune conditions that call for medical intervention.

Dr. Pooja Siwach, an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, Lucknow warns that even minor mouth ulcers can cause severe suffering. Gentle remedies—saltwater rinses cleanse, honey promotes relaxation, aloe vera hydrates, and a cold pack may help relieve pain—might be beneficial. Limiting irritants along with practising excellent oral hygiene can help prevent recurrence. These basic, natural remedies frequently perform wonderfully, aiding the body’s healing process. However, persistent or severe sores may indicate underlying health issues and require professional attention.

Dr. Surya Kiran Mudigonda, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Renova Hospitals in Hyderabad, supports this by stating that applying ice, butter, or ghee to mouth ulcers usually offers symptomatic relief while also preserving moisture for wound healing. Nonetheless, they are not the established therapeutic options for mouth ulcers. Never apply turmeric powder, clove oil, or any other irritant to mouth ulcers. They are going to escalate the discomfort and irritation.
Is it appropriate to claim that a home remedy may permanently cure mouth ulcers?
While the majority of home cures may provide temporary comfort, the notion that such approaches may permanently resolve mouth ulcers is deceptive. This could be linked to the multifactorial nature of mouth ulcers, which cannot be addressed by unverified home therapies. Moreover, home remedies are not standardised in terms of dosage, safety, or efficacy.
It should be noted that evidence-based care of mouth ulcers includes diagnosing underlying deficits, correcting systemic causes, and employing established pharmaceutical medications as necessary. Relying on unreliable remedies may result in delays in the essential evaluation and therapy.

Dr. Gagandeep Singh Sodhi, a Delhi-based dentist, adds that using untested home remedies for mouth ulcers before seeking medical attention can delay critical care, aggravate symptoms, and pose unexpected health concerns. Hence, one should consult a well-qualified dental expert for timely and accurate intervention.
Even while certain natural remedies might offer modest benefits when carefully analysed, they should not be relied on solely without expert supervision. These botanical extracts should only be used in combination with conventional therapies, particularly if the mouth ulcers are severe, persistent, or recurring.
What is the most effective approach to addressing mouth ulcers?
As previously noted, minor, non-contagious ulcers usually resolve on their own without the need for special medical intervention. Two of the key approaches to minor mouth ulcer management include:
At-home measures:
Some at-home remedies that may help relieve oral discomfort and perhaps accelerate the process of healing include utilising warm saline rinses, avoiding hot, spicy, and acidic foods, and taking sufficient amounts of fluids to keep the mouth well-hydrated.
Professional intervention:
Corticosteroids and topical anaesthetic gels are usually the first choices for pain relief and rehabilitation. Chlorhexidine, an antibacterial mouthwash, can help prevent subsequent infections. In addition, doctors may prescribe systemic therapeutics such as colchicine, dapsone, or thalidomide.
Larger, more chronic, and recurring ulcerative lesions require medical attention. Chronic mouth sores can be a sign of an underlying systemic illness, including diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV/AIDS, Behçet’s disease, coeliac disease, and immunological disorders.
It is vital to comprehend that, like any other medical condition, mouth ulcers necessitate highly skilled medical care aimed at relieving symptoms, limiting the ulcer’s duration, and enhancing the patient’s overall well-being.
