What does “Korean glass skin” actually mean?

The term “glass skin” describes skin that looks exceptionally smooth, hydrated, even-toned and luminous. Despite the name, it is not a particular skin type or a standard that everyone can naturally achieve.

According to Dr Sachin Gupta, Consultant Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, this appearance is generally associated with a consistent skincare routine involving gentle cleansing, appropriate exfoliation, hydration, moisturising and regular sunscreen use. These steps help maintain the skin barrier and hydration, which can make the surface appear smoother and more reflective.

Therefore, “glass skin” should be understood primarily as a beauty and skincare concept rather than a medical measure of healthy skin. Genetics, skin type, pigmentation, age, climate and environmental exposure can all influence how someone’s skin looks.

More importantly, there is no scientific basis for expecting one homemade treatment to completely transform a person’s natural skin texture or complexion within 30 days.

Can Indian skin achieve the same “glass skin” appearance?

Not necessarily in exactly the same way. Healthy, smooth and radiant skin is certainly achievable, but expecting everyone’s skin to develop an identical poreless or translucent appearance is unrealistic.

Dr Aseem Sharma, DNB (Dermatology), MBA & FMUHS, explains that Indian skin can differ in its tendency towards pigmentation, tanning and oiliness. Environmental factors such as strong ultraviolet exposure, heat and pollution may also affect pigmentation, texture and overall skin appearance.

This does not mean Indian skin cannot look clear or radiant. Rather, skincare goals should be based on the individual’s skin type and concerns instead of attempting to reproduce another person’s complexion or genetically influenced features.

Dr Sharma also cautions against following viral DIY skincare remedies indiscriminately. Ingredients that are inappropriate for facial skin may cause irritation or compromise the skin barrier. Some home remedies can even worsen pigmentation following inflammation.

A more sustainable approach includes appropriate cleansing and moisturising, adequate sun protection, a balanced diet and treatment of specific concerns such as acne or pigmentation when required.

Can rice improve skin brightness?

Rice-derived ingredients may have some skincare properties, but the evidence does not show that ordinary rice paste can create “glass skin” within 30 days.

Rice and rice-derived cosmetic ingredients contain starches and various bioactive compounds. Some formulations may contribute to moisturising, soothing or antioxidant effects. However, evidence involving specifically formulated rice-derived skincare products should not automatically be applied to homemade rice preparations.

Similarly, rice water may temporarily make the skin feel softer or better hydrated. This is very different from permanently changing skin colour, eliminating pores or producing the highly reflective appearance promoted as “glass skin”.

The final effect also depends on how an ingredient is formulated, its concentration and whether it can effectively reach the intended layers of the skin. Therefore, the presence of potentially useful compounds in rice does not prove that applying kitchen-made rice paste will dramatically transform the skin.

Does adding raw milk make rice paste more effective?

No. There is no good clinical evidence that combining raw milk with rice paste can produce Korean-like “glass skin” in 30 days.

Milk contains lactic acid, which belongs to the alpha-hydroxy acid group. Lactic acid is used in properly formulated skincare products because it can help exfoliate superficial dead skin cells and improve skin texture.

However, applying raw milk is not equivalent to using a professionally formulated lactic-acid skincare product. The concentration, pH and stability are not controlled in a homemade preparation.

Raw milk also introduces another concern: it is unpasteurised and can contain microorganisms. Using it directly on the face therefore provides no clear advantage over appropriately formulated skincare products and may cause problems in sensitive or acne-prone skin.

A rice-and-milk paste might leave the skin feeling temporarily softer or smoother after application, but a temporary cosmetic effect should not be confused with a lasting biological transformation of the skin.

Can this remedy change your skin in just 30 days?

No. The claim is exaggerated. Skin appearance can certainly improve over several weeks when an appropriate skincare routine is followed consistently. However, there is no reliable evidence showing that applying rice and raw milk for 30 days can produce the specific appearance promoted online as Korean “glass skin”.

The outcome of skincare is influenced by numerous factors, including genetics, pigmentation, acne, sun exposure, hydration, skin-barrier health and underlying dermatological conditions.

Rather than attempting to eliminate every pore or change one’s natural complexion, a more realistic goal is maintaining healthy, well-hydrated and protected skin.

Regular sunscreen, suitable moisturisers and evidence-based active ingredients can be selected according to individual skin concerns. Persistent pigmentation, acne, irritation or other skin problems should be assessed by a dermatologist instead of repeatedly experimenting with DIY treatments.
