A few users on social media have started sharing a post claiming that putting tampons soaked in Ivermectin solution inside you will cure Covid-19. We fact-checked and found the claim to be false.
While the original claim related to this has been removed, the reference to the method continues to spread across multiple social media platforms. A tweet referring to the claim is given below.
What is Ivermectin?
Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic drug used to treat worms and infections caused by worms. It is veterinary medicine, used to treat worm infections in horses but is also approved by the USFDA for the treatment of certain parasitic infections in humans.
Is Ivermectin effective against Covid-19?
Not yet proven. Research is underway (as of September 13, 2021) Scientists have been studying the effectiveness of Ivermectin in treating Covid-19. USFDA has still not approved the drug for its use against Covid-19 (as of September 22, 2021) and has issued a warning against unauthorized use of the drug.
Can placing Ivermectin soaked tampons inside you cure Covid-19?
No. There is no evidence of this claim.
Ivermectin is an oral medicine. While there are a few cases of topical application of Ivermectin (like on the head for Lice infection), we could not find any use cases of vaginal application of Ivermectin.
Vaginal medicines are most commonly used to combat infection, inflammation, or dryness of the vaginal mucosa. There is no sane logic of applying an oral medicine made for treating a parasitic infection through the vagina.
Tampons are used to absorb blood and vaginal secretions by insertion into the vagina during menstruation. They are not meant as a medicine applicators anyway.
