The Claim

A Twitter post reads, “Papaya seeds, a magical cure for cancer and others!”

Fact Check

Can papaya seeds cure cancer?

Not always. There is currently a lack of more credible scientific evidence to support the claim that papaya seeds can cure cancer. While some studies have investigated the potential anti-cancer properties of papaya seeds and extracts, further research is needed to determine their potential effectiveness in humans.

Papaya seeds contain various types of antioxidants, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, etc., and research has shown that polyphenols can exert anticancer effects through a broad range of mechanisms.

Research states that Isothiocyanate, a chemical present in papaya seeds, has been proven to have anticancer characteristics and can help prevent colon, lung, leukemia, breast, and prostate tumour.

Another research indicates that the black seeds from papaya may have the potential to reduce the growth of prostate cells; however, the research also indicates that the consumption of white seeds should be avoided as they may stimulate pre-existing prostate cancer.

Nutritionist

Nutritionist Nidhi Sarin elaborates on this by stating, “All the seeds are really nutritious some are good in omega and some in antioxidants. Antioxidants fight disease-causing free radicals to prevent oxidative stress and ward off chronic diseases, and currently, there are so many studies going on seeds. Some studies have found that papaya seeds could help fight infections, promote kidney health, protect against cancer, and enhance digestive health, but then you can’t just rely on the seeds to cure a disease like cancer. It needs proper treatment along with the right nutritional intervention.”

It must be noted that additional studies are needed to evaluate the effects of papaya seeds on cancer growth in humans. Moreover, these studies cannot be generalized to every type of cancer.

Dr P Rammanohar

Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director, Amrita School of Ayurveda, highlights this by stating, “Cancer is not a single disease, and there is no remedy for cancer. Different types of cancer are treated with different procedures of chemotherapy. One drug does not work across all cancers.”

As with any supplement or natural remedy, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional before using papaya seeds to treat cancer or any other health condition.
