The Claim

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claims that garlic can cure strokes, along with several other health conditions. The post suggests that infusing garlic in hot water can have healing effects on a variety of ailments, including strokes, gout, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Fact Check

Can garlic really cure strokes?

No, garlic cannot cure strokes. Garlic has been celebrated in traditional medicine for its health benefits. However, there is no scientific evidence that it can cure or reverse the effects of a stroke. Strokes are serious medical events that need urgent attention. Similarly, we have also seen people promoting garlic as a natural viagra, which is largely false.

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, either by a blockage (ischemic stroke) or by a blood vessel bursting (haemorrhagic stroke). This disruption cuts off oxygen to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells. Immediate medical care is needed to restore blood flow and minimise brain damage. Standard treatments include clot-busting drugs or surgery, but garlic has no role in reversing the damage due to a stroke.

Dr Kunal Bahrani, Pediatrician

Dr Kunal Bahrani, Director & HOD Neurology, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, says, “While garlic offers some benefits for cardiovascular health, such as managing cholesterol and blood pressure, it has no role in treating strokes. A stroke is a critical condition that demands immediate medical intervention, like Thrombolytic therapy or Mechanical Thrombectomy. Garlic can help in overall health, but it cannot replace the urgent treatments required for stroke recovery.”

Does garlic have any effect on stroke prevention?

Yes, garlic can help reduce some of the risk factors that lead to strokes, but it cannot cure a stroke itself. Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which is known to help lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and improve circulation—factors that contribute to heart health.

A research from 2023 suggests that garlic’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties might help reduce brain damage and improve recovery after a stroke, at least in animal models. While this sounds promising, it doesn’t mean that garlic can replace emergency medical care. Garlic may play a supportive role in recovery, but it should not be relied upon as a treatment for strokes.

Dr Supriya Patankar, Emergency Med, ICU

We reached out to Dr Supriya Patankar, Associate Consultant, Intensive Care Unit, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune. She says, “Natural remedies like garlic are often claimed to treat everything from acne to colds, and even strokes. However, garlic cannot help with stroke recovery. While it offers heart-healthy and anti-inflammatory benefits, it cannot reverse or treat a stroke, nor can it replace emergency medical intervention.

She further explains, “If a stroke occurs, immediate medical treatment is essential. Some strokes can be treated within 3 to 24 hours of symptom onset. Delaying care for natural remedies like garlic can lead to severe complications or death. Garlic doesn’t guarantee stroke prevention either—factors like genetics, lifestyle, and existing conditions play a larger role.”

Dr Patankar adds, “The American Heart Association warns that garlic can interact with drugs like blood thinners, which are often critical in stroke treatment. Large amounts of garlic, often needed for its supposed benefits, are unrealistic for regular consumption. In summary, while garlic is a flavorful addition to meals and has some health benefits, it is not a substitute for proper stroke treatment or prevention.”

Can garlic be a substitute for medical treatments?

No, garlic cannot replace medical treatment. Even though garlic is good for your heart, it cannot treat a stroke once it has occurred. A 2013 study looked at garlic as a complementary treatment, particularly for lowering cholesterol. Their findings suggested that garlic could be helpful when used alongside conventional treatments for managing heart health, but it should not serve as the primary therapy. But, we still need more research for the

Additionally, garlic can interact with certain medications, especially blood thinners. For people taking blood-thinning medications, consuming garlic in large amounts or as supplements could increase the risk of bleeding. It’s recommended that those on blood thinners avoid garlic about a week before surgery or dental procedures to prevent complications. Interestingly, garlic’s benefits for heart health are real. Nonetheless, it’s important to use it safely and consult a healthcare provider if you are taking medications or have health concerns.

Dr Sreenivas Minakshisundaram, Neuro

Dr Sreenivas Meenakshisundaram, Consultant Neurologist, MGM Healthcare, Chennai, says, “Medical interventions are definitely necessary to treat stroke, especially in the immediate aftermath. With recent advances in stroke management, there are options to effectively treat and even reverse the effects of a stroke, if medical help is sought early. The only role natural remedies hold is in ensuring good nutrition, which can help accelerate recovery in the long term after a stroke, when combined with proper rehabilitation.”

What are the proven ways to prevent strokes?

Garlic may contribute to overall heart health, but stroke prevention requires lifestyle changes and medical care. Here are some proven methods to lower the risk of stroke:

  • Maintain a healthy diet: Choose a healthy diet that is low in salt, unhealthy fats, and processed sugars. This can help prevent high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Both of these are major risk factors for strokes. Contrary to some claims, bathing incorrectly does not increase your risk of strokes.
  • Exercise regularly: Physical activity improves blood circulation and helps to lower blood pressure.
  • Control chronic conditions: Managing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and irregular heartbeat through medication and lifestyle changes can significantly reduce stroke risk.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive drinking: Smoking and alcohol both increase the likelihood of strokes and other heart-related problems.

THIP Media Take

Garlic offers several health benefits, such as lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, but it cannot cure strokes. Stroke is a medical emergency that requires quick professional treatment to prevent brain damage and improve outcomes. Garlic may help prevent some of the factors that lead to stroke, but it is not a treatment for the condition. If you or someone else experiences symptoms of a stroke, seeking immediate medical help is extremely essential. Incorporating garlic into your diet for its long-term heart benefits is a good idea, but it is not a substitute for medical care.
