Fact Check: Can DNA unlock immortality and reverse aging?

Published on:
Could DNA be the answer to achieving immortality and reversing the aging process?
Is DNA the secret to eternal life and age reversal?
Not exactly. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that humans can become immortal using their genes. While certain genes may play a role in aging, no treatment is currently available to completely prevent aging. Genetic interventions show promise in slowing down aspects of aging, but achieving a comprehensive reversal of aging is complex. More research is needed to develop safe and effective interventions.

Quick Take

A social media post alleges that individuals utilize less than a third of their DNA, suggesting the existence of immortal genes and immortal DNAs. The post goes on to assert that one can harness their DNA to achieve immortality and reverse the aging process. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False.

The Claim

In a post of an Instagram video,  an American spiritual teacher and author named JZ Knight emphasizes the untapped potential of human DNA referring to some Janine gene fingerprinting. According to Knight, the majority of people use less than a third of their DNA, unaware of the existence of immortal genes within them. She claims that individuals possess the ability to grow and transform any part of their body through their DNA. Furthermore, Knight suggests that by harnessing the power of DNA, one can not only achieve immortality but also reverse the aging process. However, she points out that many fail to realize this potential due to solely focusing on their emotional well-being rather than exploring the broader possibilities offered by their genetic makeup.

Fact Check

What is a gene?

A gene is a DNA segment containing the information needed to make a specific protein. The proteins play a role in everything from cell structure to metabolism. They are made up of a sequence of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA. Genes are passed from parents to offspring, and they determine many of our physical and biological traits, such as hair color, eye color, and susceptibility to disease.

The human genome contains about 20,000 genes to 25,000 genes. Each gene is located on a specific chromosome. Chromosomes are structures that contain DNA. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes. Sometimes, they can be affected by mutations.

Can one become immortal with the use of their gene?

Not as of now. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that humans can become immortal using their genes. However, there is some research that suggests certain genes may play a role in aging and longevity. For example, one gene called SIRT6 has been shown to extend lifespan in mice. By targeting such genes, scientists may be able to develop treatments that slow down or even reverse the aging process, but currently, no such treatment is available.

It is essential to note that aging is a complex process that is influenced by many factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle. It is unlikely that any single gene therapy can completely prevent aging.

In addition, there are ethical concerns about using gene therapy to extend lifespan. Some people argue that it would be unfair to give some people the ability to live forever while others would be unable to afford the treatment. Others argue that it would lead to overpopulation and environmental problems.

The idea of becoming immortal using genes is still far off. However, research in this area is ongoing.

In conclusion, genetic research holds promise for improving human health and extending lifespan. Still, it is important to note that achieving immortality remains speculative and far from attainable based on our current knowledge.

Can aging be reversed with the use of their DNA?

Not exactly. Our DNA, which contains our genes, plays a crucial role in the aging process. Genetic factors influence various aspects of aging, including cellular repair mechanisms, telomere length, and susceptibility to age-related diseases.

Several experimental approaches, such as gene therapy and genetic manipulation, have shown promising results in laboratory settings and animal models. However, their translation to humans is still in the early stages. Scientists are studying the genetic components of aging to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions. A study published in the journal Nature in 2019 showed that mice having restored telomeres, which are a region of repetitive DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome, that protect them from damage, lived longer and had healthier bodies than mice that did not receive the treatment. Telomere shortening is a significant factor in aging as telomere length shortens with age, so if it’s somehow possible to restore telomeres in humans safely (like those in animals through procedures such as TERT), it could reverse some of the effects of aging.

However, we need more research to determine whether this approach is safe and effective in humans. In addition, other factors contribute to aging, such as damage to DNA, inflammation, and changes in metabolism. It is possible that by targeting these factors, scientists may be able to develop treatments that can slow down or even reverse the aging process.

It’s worth noting that aging is a multifaceted process influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, environment, and genetics. While genetic interventions may potentially slow down aspects of aging, achieving a complete and comprehensive reversal of aging is a complex challenge that requires further scientific advancements and understanding.
