The Claim

A viral Instagram video claims that drinking coriander seed water can “detox” the ovaries, supporting hormonal balance and reproductive health. The post suggests soaking coriander seeds in hot water overnight and drinking the strained water on an empty stomach for 2-3 months to achieve these benefits.

Fact Check

Can coriander seed water really detox ovaries?

No, coriander seed water does not detox ovaries. However, it does offer some health benefits. The term “detox” is often misused in wellness trends. Detoxification is a function of the liver and kidneys, which filter out harmful substances from the body. Ovaries do not store toxins, so they do not require detoxing.

The belief that certain foods or drinks can flush out toxins is not backed by science. If harmful substances accumulate in the body, medical intervention is required, not home remedies. There is no research proving that coriander seed water can cleanse or detoxify reproductive organs.

Dr Almas Fatma, General Physician

We reached out to Dr Almas Fatma, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai, for her opinion on coriander seed water for ovary detox. She clarifies, “The idea of ‘ovary detox’ is a myth. Ovaries do not store toxins, so they do not need detoxing. The body naturally eliminates waste through the liver and kidneys. While coriander seed water may have some health benefits, there is no scientific evidence that it can cleanse or improve ovarian function. For reproductive health, focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and medical guidance when needed.”

Similarly, another post claims that a womb detox drink made up of turmeric, ginger, lemon, cinnamon and black pepper can fix reproductive issues and boost fertility. However this is false.

Does coriander seed water support hormonal balance?

Not significantly. Coriander seeds contain plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies suggest coriander may help with digestion (animal study) and blood sugar regulation (animal studies), but its effects on hormones remain unclear.

Hormonal balance depends on various factors, including diet, stress, exercise, and medical conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders. Drinking coriander water alone is unlikely to regulate hormones or improve reproductive health in a meaningful way.

Is it really necessary to detox ovaries?

No, ovaries do not need detoxing. They are reproductive organs, not filtration systems. The body naturally removes waste and toxins through the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and skin.

Many “detox” claims focus on reproductive health, the liver, or kidneys, often without scientific evidence. Irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, or fertility issues are usually caused by underlying medical conditions, not toxin buildup. Supporting reproductive health requires a balanced diet, regular exercise, and professional medical guidance when needed.

Similar to this, there are claims that onion tea can cleanse the uterus and make the uterus “dirt-free.” However this is scientifically incorrect.

Can coriander water help with reproductive health?

Not directly. While coriander seeds contain beneficial compounds, there is no evidence that they improve ovary function or fertility. In fact, a 2018 study on female mice found that coriander seed water negatively affected reproductive health by reducing ovarian follicle size and number—both crucial for fertility. The treated mice also did not conceive after stopping the treatment. However, since this effect has not been studied in humans, its impact on human fertility remains unclear, and more research is needed.

Some traditional medicine systems use coriander for digestion and mild inflammation, but this does not mean it detoxifies the ovaries or regulates hormones. True reproductive health support comes from proper nutrition, stress management, maintaining a healthy weight, and seeking medical guidance when needed. Misleading “ovary detox” claims can prevent people from addressing real health concerns with proven medical care.

Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, Indore

We spoke with Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, an Ayurveda Consultant from Indore, to get her expert opinion on coriander water for reproductive health. She says, “In Ayurveda, coriander is said to have ushna virya (hot potency), which makes it an anti-aphrodisiac and may decrease sexual desire. Since Shukra dhatu (the reproductive tissue) has somya (cool) properties, ushna virya herbs are not considered beneficial for it. Though coriander is pitta shamak (balances excess heat) due to its tikta (bitter) and kashay (astringent) taste, it is not recommended during pregnancy because of its warming nature and phytoestrogen content. While it has digestive benefits, there is no evidence that coriander water can detox the ovaries or improve reproductive health.”

THIP Media Take

The claim that coriander seed water can detox ovaries is false. Even though coriander has some health benefits, it does not cleanse or detoxify the ovaries. The body’s natural detoxification systems handle waste removal efficiently. Misleading wellness trends like this can distract from real reproductive health issues that may require medical attention.
