Quick Take
An Instagram post claims that cold cough home remedies made from onion, garlic, lemon, cinnamon, and honey can cure cold, cough, and fever in just one use. After fact checking, we found that the claim is false.

The Claim
An Instagram post suggests boiling onion, garlic, lemon, and cinnamon in water. Then, let it cool, add honey, and drink it like tea. This home remedy claims to treat cold, cough, and fever in just one use.

Fact Check
Can cold cough home remedies cure symptoms quickly?
No. Natural ingredients like onion, garlic, lemon, cinnamon, and honey have health benefits, but they cannot cure a cold, cough, or fever in one use. Colds are caused by viruses, and the body typically needs 7-10 days to recover, even with treatment. These ingredients may help ease symptoms, but scientific evidence does not support a one-use cure. For example, honey can soothe a sore throat, and garlic has antibacterial properties, but they do not eliminate viruses instantly.
Do onion garlic for cough fight viruses effectively?
Maybe. Onions and garlic contain compounds like allicin, which have some antiviral and antibacterial properties. Small studies suggest garlic might reduce the severity of cold symptoms if taken regularly. However, there is no evidence that boiling onion garlic for cough and drinking them once will cure a cold or fever. The body’s immune system primarily fights the virus, and these foods may only offer mild support.
Can lemon and cinnamon boost recovery speed?
No. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which helps support the immune system. But studies show that vitamin C doesn’t prevent colds for most people. Taking it every day might help you recover about a day faster, but it won’t stop the symptoms or make them milder. Starting vitamin C after catching a cold doesn’t help either. Most people get enough from food, and the extra is flushed out in urine. Only people who do heavy physical activity in cold weather, like athletes or soldiers, may see some benefit.
Moreover, cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties, but there is no research proving it can cure cold cough home remedies in one dose. These ingredients may make you feel better temporarily, but they do not address the virus directly.
Is honey effective for cough and fever relief?
Yes, but not for a complete cure in one use. Honey is proven to help reduce cough severity, especially in children, as shown in a 2018 study. It can coat the throat, easing irritation. However, honey does not cure the underlying viral infection or reduce fever significantly. Its effect is limited to symptom relief, not a one-time cure.

Dr Muskan Thakur, Ayurvedic Consultant, from Indore, explains, “In Ayurveda, honey (Madhu) is described as having the gunas of Ruksha (dry), Laghu (light), and Ushna Virya (hot potency), with Madhura (sweet) and Kashaya (astringent) rasa. Its Ushna nature makes it effective in reducing aggravated Kapha dosha, which is commonly associated with cough, congestion, and throat irritation. The dry and light qualities help break down mucus, while its astringent action tones the mucous membranes. Though honey does not act as a direct antipyretic, it supports strength (Balya) and quick recovery during fever by providing nourishment and aiding digestion (Deepana).”
Are there risks in relying on a home remedy alone?
Yes. Relying solely on cold cough home remedies could delay proper treatment. Fevers, especially if high or persistent, may signal a more serious condition requiring medical attention. While these ingredients are generally safe, they are not a substitute for rest, hydration, or, in some cases, medical care like antipyretics for fever. Always consult a doctor if symptoms worsen or last longer than expected.

Dr Ubaid ur Rehman, General Physician, Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, says, “Relying only on home remedies like lemon or vitamin C for colds can be risky. While these remedies may offer some comfort or mild benefit, they can’t replace proper medical advice, especially if symptoms get worse or last too long. It’s also important to remember that taking too much vitamin C doesn’t boost your immunity further, your body just flushes out the extra. The best way to support your immune system is by eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, staying active, and keeping up with regular health checks. If you’re unsure, always speak to your doctor rather than self-diagnosing or overloading on supplements.”
Similarly, there are claims that ginger and turmeric can instantly cure a cough and cold. However, this is also misleading.
In summary, the claim is false. While onion, garlic, lemon, cinnamon, and honey have health benefits and may ease some symptoms of a cold or cough, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that cold cough home remedies can cure cold, cough, and fever in just one use.
