The Claim

In an Instagram video, the claimant talks about the supposed benefits of drinking clove water, stating that it can cleanse a smoker’s lungs and also kill stomach parasites.

Fact Check

Does clove detox a smoker’s lungs?

No. The lungs don’t “detox” the way the liver or kidneys do. Once cigarette smoke is inhaled, thousands of chemicals, tar, carbon monoxide, and other irritants, settle deep into the airways and lung tissue. This damage builds up slowly over time, and it cannot be undone by chewing a spice or drinking an herbal mix.

Cloves do contain eugenol, a compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies. But antioxidant activity is not the same as detoxification. There is no clinical evidence showing that clove or eugenol can remove smoke residues, dissolve tar, or reverse smoking-related lung damage in humans.

Can clove clear mucus, tar, or toxins from the lungs?

No. Tar is a thick, sticky residue that accumulates in the airways with repeated smoking. It isn’t water-soluble, and it can’t be flushed out by food, herbs, or drinks,no matter how natural they sound.

The lungs clean themselves using a built-in system called mucociliary clearance. Tiny hair-like structures, known as cilia, constantly move mucus upward so trapped particles can be coughed out or swallowed. Smoking damages these cilia, slowing this process or stopping it altogether.

What actually restarts lung cleaning is quitting smoking, not adding clove to the diet. Once smoking stops, cilia gradually recover, mucus starts moving again, and the lungs begin clearing debris on their own. This recovery takes weeks to months, and sometimes longer. Clove does not repair cilia or speed up this process in any proven way.

Dr Rohan Bartake

According to Dr Rohan Bartake, the idea of “detoxifying” the lungs is often misunderstood. He explains that once lung damage occurs such as tar accumulation or destruction of the alveoli it cannot be reversed by any food, drink, or herbal remedy. While a nutritious diet and healthier lifestyle can support overall body function, improve breathing efficiency, and help prevent further harm, they do not cleanse the lungs directly. Measures like quitting smoking, reducing exposure to pollutants, and staying well hydrated allow the lungs to use their own repair mechanisms, but herbal teas or specific foods do not have the ability to physically clean or detox the lungs.

Is clove at least beneficial for lung health?

Not in the way the claim suggests. Clove has been studied for general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, mostly in lab and animal research. While these findings are scientifically interesting, they cannot be directly applied to a smoker’s lungs.

There are no human studies showing that clove improves lung function, reverses smoke damage, or lowers long-term respiratory risks in smokers. At best, clove is a flavourful spice with some biological activity. That does not make it a lung detoxifier.

Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, Indore

According to Dr Muskan Thakur, an Ayurveda consultant based in Indore, cloves are valued in Ayurvedic practice for their warming nature and antimicrobial properties, which may help soothe throat irritation and support overall respiratory comfort. However, she cautions that cloves on their own are not a treatment for bronchitis or other respiratory infections. Ayurveda follows an individualised, holistic approach that combines dietary guidance, herbal support, and lifestyle adjustments. For symptoms that are persistent or severe, Dr Thakur advises seeking care from a qualified medical professional to ensure proper evaluation and treatment.

What actually helps a smoker’s lungs recover?

Yes, stopping smoking helps. This is the only approach consistently proven to allow the lungs to heal.

After quitting:

  • Within days to weeks, oxygen levels improve
  • Over several weeks, cilia start working again
  • Over months, coughing and breathlessness often reduce
  • Long-term health risks fall compared to continued smoking

Supportive habits, staying hydrated, gentle physical activity, vaccinations, and timely medical check-ups,can support lung health. But none of these truly “detox” the lungs on their own.

So Clove cannot detox a smoker’s lungs or kill stomach parasites as mentioned in the video. The claim oversimplifies how lungs work and greatly overstates what a spice can do. While cloves can be part of a normal, balanced diet, they do not remove smoke toxins, clear tar, or repair lung damage. If lung health is the goal, the message is clear: quitting smoking matters far more than any clove-based remedy.
