The Claim

In an Instagram post, a woman shares a recipe for “Black Sanjeevani Toffees” made using black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, sabja seeds, dates, and a small amount of desi ghee. In the caption, she explains the preparation method, which involves roasting the seeds, blending them with dates into a thick paste, and shaping the mixture into small candies or balls.

The claimant says the recipe was suggested by a Chinese friend and alleges that consuming these homemade toffees can help reverse premature greying and promote massive hair growth.

Fact Check

Can black sesame seeds improve hair growth?

Maybe, but the evidence is still limited. Black sesame seeds are rich in iron, zinc, copper, vitamin B1, healthy fats, antioxidants, and plant compounds called lignans. These nutrients may support scalp health and reduce oxidative stress, which can indirectly benefit hair quality.

Interestingly, sesame has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine for preventing hair loss. A recent 2026 laboratory study explored sesamin, a compound found in sesame, and suggested it may influence pathways linked with androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern hair loss.

However, this does not mean eating black sesame laddoos or candies will suddenly regrow hair. Human clinical evidence is still weak. Experts continue to state that there is not enough strong proof to claim black sesame seeds can dramatically stop hair fall or reverse hair thinning.

Can pumpkin seeds actually help with hair loss?

Yes, pumpkin seed oil is one of the few seed-based ingredients that has some human research behind it. A well-known 2014 clinical trial involving men with pattern hair loss found that participants taking pumpkin seed oil supplements had a 40% increase in hair count over 24 weeks compared to 10% in the placebo group.

Researchers believe pumpkin seed oil may work by influencing hormones like DHT, which is linked with androgenetic hair loss. It also contains vitamin E, zinc, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants that may support scalp health.

But there is an important catch. Most studies used concentrated pumpkin seed oil supplements, not homemade candies. The studies were also relatively small, mainly involved men with pattern baldness, and do not prove that eating a spoonful of pumpkin seeds daily will create dramatic hair growth. So while pumpkin seeds may have some promise, the viral claim is still exaggerated.

Dietitian Sauda Rahat

Sauda Rahat, Dietitian at Femly, explains that pumpkin seeds may offer some support in cases of mild or early-stage hair thinning, but they should not be viewed as a miracle solution for chronic hair loss, premature greying or advanced baldness. According to her, visible improvements, if any, usually require consistent intake over several months and are still not comparable to medically approved treatments such as Minoxidil or Finasteride.

She notes that pumpkin seeds contain nutrients linked with scalp and hair health, including zinc, magnesium, healthy fats, antioxidants, and phytosterols. These phytosterols are of particular interest because they may help influence DHT, a hormone associated with pattern hair loss. However, she adds that most of the research has focused on concentrated pumpkin seed oil supplements, and consuming very small quantities of pumpkin seeds is unlikely to produce dramatic results on its own.

Can sabja seeds strengthen hair naturally?

Maybe, but there is no strong clinical proof. Sabja seeds, also known as basil seeds, contain protein, iron, antioxidants, fibre, and omega-3 fats. Many wellness websites claim they improve scalp circulation and reduce hair fall.

However, no large human trials show that sabja seeds can regrow hair or treat baldness. Much of the information online is based on traditional use, anecdotal claims, or theoretical nutritional benefits rather than proven medical evidence.

Can poppy seeds and dates make hair thicker?

No, not directly. Poppy seeds contain minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium, while dates provide carbohydrates, small amounts of iron, antioxidants, and energy. These foods can contribute to overall nutrition, especially if someone has poor dietary intake. But there are currently no strong research papers showing that poppy seeds or dates directly stimulate hair follicles or cause significant hair regrowth.

They may support general health, but calling them “hair growth boosters” is scientifically misleading.

Can one recipe solve hair fall problems?

No, because hair loss is rarely caused by one single issue. Hair fall can happen due to iron deficiency, low protein intake, thyroid disorders, PCOS, stress, rapid weight loss, vitamin deficiencies, scalp infections, autoimmune conditions, medications, or genetics.

This is why many people become disappointed after trying viral “hair growth foods”. Hair health usually improves through a combination of balanced nutrition, proper sleep, stress management, treatment of deficiencies, and medical care when needed.

Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist

We spoke to Dermatologist Dr Ekansh Shekhar to understand whether these homemade seed candies can actually help with hair fall. He said, “While these toffees may provide some nutritional and antioxidant benefits, there is currently no scientific evidence proving that they can prevent or reduce hair loss. Healthy hair is usually supported by an overall balanced diet, good scalp and hair care practices, and treatments that are medically validated.”

These homemade seed candies can certainly be a nutritious snack. They contain healthy fats, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. But presenting them as a solution for “massive hair growth” goes far beyond what science currently supports.
